I remember those days. I had a twenty-two inch waist, a poodle skirt over crinolin slips, and went to the record hop at the OWLS CLUB every Tuesday night. Bill Haley's Rock Around The Clock was thee song. On Thursday night I'd put on my heels and go to the "grownup" dance at McDaniel's Hall where we danced to an orchestra, rock and roll and swing!! Nothing like it since!

I am a little younger, but was a pre teen in the latter part of the 50s. I did get to see Elvis in Roanoke in 1958 as my mother wanted to see him!

One of Bill Haley's many lead guitar players became a guitar instructor in Tampa, Florida and maintained a small degree of local fame for many years. I remember that he always billed himself as "Bill Haley's Lead Guitar", when in fact I learned years later that Haley ran through "session" guitar players like crazy. He was an interesting guy, though.

Indeed. We've had a few come out of Tampa like Mike Pinera of Iron Butterfly, Stephen Stills of CSR, and all the members of The Outlaws (who helped to pioneer Southern Rock).

Usually the band was just two guys or maybe three then they picked up local musicians for each play date. So a guy could work with Bill Haley, Taj Mahal and others without ever having to leave town.. It looked good on the resume and with the talk and jam sessions that happened at local after hours clubs left interesting stories to be told over and over again from one occasion to another. It made for an extraordinry comradeship among musicans all over the country.

We did not have fitness centers in my neighborhood, and the only gym was in the elementary school, were we exercised at least twice a week with the teacher.
And, I am sorry I never heard of this group, thanks for sharing the group with me.

that is some kind of crazy workout - i guess i like dancing somewhat - but i'm not sure i would sign up 4 that - & r those ladies gettin tossed around in heels????

we wore, mainly flats in those days, well I did! But heels were usually not more than and 1 1/2", jsut 'party shoes' went higher.
i danced like this in the 70s London scene in VERY high heels, guess we just had much stronger legs and a better sense of balance!

These kids today are so soft... I can in no way see any of them being that physiocal to have fun... its very sad.. back in those days you seldom saw a fat person , much less a fat teenager!

Yes, I don't see any fat kids here and I don't recall fat kids all the time I was growing up, gangly teen agers!

Yes, not everybody employed gardeners, neighbourhood kids would come mow your lawn or sweep the drive for a buck!

I remember mowing lawns for $2. No, self propelled mowers or leaf blowers, either. Had to sweep the walks and driveways afterwards.

I had no idea it was so athletic. Were the regular people that way, too?

Dancing with the stars has shown me that a little over a minute can leave even professional athletes winded. Those dancers must have been in superb shape.

I love the jitterbug. Won a contest many years ago with my now ex-husband. We really could dance back then. The old bones would prevent me from being this wild now, but I can still shake a tail feather, or two.

Yes, there was a resurgence of jive in England (London) in the 1970's where I got to show a lot of vigourous steps!
