In celebration of the civilization changing development that is taking place in Logan, Utah, with respect to what we are doing with our sewage lagoon, I have commissioned myself - my being somewhat eccentric in my tastes - to have composed this meditation in commeration of this development. Look out world. Cache Valley is about to show the world what we can do with our poo. Logan City and USU's biology department, with the help of some state and federal agencies, is set to be perhaps the nation's first to do this on a large scale. In the old model of how we deal with environmental problems, environmentalists, government regulators, and overtaxed taxpayers would have had the usual big contentious row. Charges of short-sighted irresponsible polluters out to plunder the kids' inheritance, the earth's priceless biological capital, met with counter charges of godless socialists out to do us out of our Constitutional liberties would have flown back and forth fast and fierce. This time around, however, we have got us a different model, a whole new paradigm, that vision thing, that just might be win-win for everyone and a positive example for the whole world to follow. The problem is that our sewage lagoon for Cache Valley is discharging beyond the legal limit of phosphorous in the form of algae that gorge on the phosphorous into Cutler reservoir. The feds and the state have been on our case about this. One tried and true remedy is install a $270,000,000 mechanical contraption - that's $60 a month more on our utility bills to you and me - to remove the algae from the effluent of our sewage lagoon. And then on top of that, there's the additional problem of disposing of the removed algae. Say what, said Dr. Ronald Sims, a professor in our USU biology department. You're going to pay good money to throw away a valuable cash crop? Just so happens that have we got a deal for you. You need a way to solve your algae problem on your sewage lagoon. We need a demonstration project to scale up what we've been developing in the lab here at USU, namely methods for converting algae into both diesel fuel and also into methane - that's natural gas to you. What say we get together? Thanks to our forward looking city plant manager, Issa Hamud, looks like that's exactly what is set to happen. If this works out, an environmental problem will have been solved to much better than the state standard requires, the project could come close to or better in paying for itself, our Logan City recycling trucks and other city vehicles will be fueled by carbon neutral bio-diesel, and 300 plus Cache Valley homes will get their electricity from a carbon neutral methane gas turbine powered generator. Not bad. And all with just poo. Look at us, world. Watch and learn how well educated conservative people well grounded in ethical values step up to the plate and meet a challenge. Us, run away from a challenge? Heck no. Challenge equals opportunity.
