While written for bassoon, the Sonate works extremely well for trombone. The first movement is a gorgeous lyrical melody one of the nicest Hindemith ever created. The second movement starts with another lyrical melody but soon a march emerges very sprightly and reminiscent of 19th century wind band marches they then settles into a longing refrain that ends without complete resolution.
