I performed this piece at the La Crosse New Music Festival on 11/14/2002. My accompanist was Pamela Kelly. This is a very interesting piece. At the beginning and the end the trombonist plays into the piano with the sustain pedal depressed. The strings resonate with the notes played creating an ethereal chord that persists after the marcato notes from the trombone sound. The piano accompanies this after image of the trombone. The middle section consists of several distinct sections with melodies built on a short motif presented in a variety of moods. In the trombone and piano passing the melody back and forth overlying a repeated ostinato. The middle portion is a beautiful duet between the piano and trombone. Three cadenzas for trombone alone bridge the various sections. This is an excellent piece that is very approachable for the audience. It is not technically challenging, but the rhythmic coordination between trombone and piano require a lot of practice.
