It takes real gonads to sit down in front of a camera and lay it on the line.......
(By the way, is there any hate crime legislation against five o'clock shadow??)
**chuckle**
Thanks berf ! ! !
When I first watched your argument against hate crime legislation, I decided to play devil's advocate and think of possible other instances where past legislation may or may not be redundant:
*Affirmative Action
*Sexual Harassment
In these cases, the idea is not to punish people MORE for the same crimes.
The idea is for the public to understand the emotional and societal damage done when a crime is committed BECAUSE of someone's race, gender, religion, age, or sexual preference.
In these cases, a clear message has to be sent to society that we will not stand for this type of behavior. So you can't punish JUST for the crime itself, you expand the scope of the law to reflect the severity of the crime.
This should be easy to understand.
When society feels that the public has a better understanding of the issue, it will debate the existence of such laws, hence the debate over Affirmative Action.
It's only "easy" for idiotic liberal loons like YOU to "understand." For everyone else, there is no understanding for moronic concepts like "hate crimes."
Certainly not you, moron.
National Tragedy #1- When 911 happened, thousands of people that even remotely look Middle Eastern were subjected to harassment, beatings, employment terminations, kicked out of restaurants, etc. Don't know if there were any killings.
National Tragedy #2-- In the aftermath of the Oklahoma City Bombing, I heard NOT ONE THING of anyone bearing the look of one of the perpetrators harmed or even insulted in any way.
Too many people think its okay to single out a "them" to blame for their upset and act accordingly. But "them" is rarely a white male. I could cite a few more examples, but hopefully that's enough.
The statistics point to a problem that will not go away without special legislation. That's why its been created, and why it needs to stay until the message has gotten through that things like the aftermath of 911 on innocent citizens must stop.
The rest of what I said stands, though.
