Okay. Here's the deal. I'm 50 in this film, and my inner 23-year-old is rolling on the floor crying. I remember how to split wood, but I've been working behind a desk for 15 years and I could use a little oomph. Still, I've seen some really sorry videos posted on how to split wood, and this is a bit closer to reality.

Lisa, there aren't any size measures in the picture, but I'm not particularly tall. Splitting wood this way - relying on speed rather than power - can work for anyone. To learn more, google "how to split wood" (with or without quotes). My post on the topic is about to roll 10,000 views.

Very interesting. It looks like you're using the weight of the axe less than the strength of your arms. Makes my shoulders hurt just watching you, though.

I'm actually employing a bit of physics, Barb. My hand is on the inside of a big circle formed by the path of the splitter head. As I step backward and forward I move the center of the circle in a way that whips the splitter through the air. I'm using my legs more than anything else. I don't twist my waist, and the part of my arm that gets the biggest workout is my hands, that have to fight to keep a grip. You may notice that when the splitter reaches the wood, it's going quite fast. Speed is everything; brawn is secondary (though when I was 23 I'd have gone through that in one whack guaranteed).

youre one tough cookie, ron. but i'd try it at least once. i had to play the vid twice because my son thought you were using a sledgehammer. typical city kid response.

Well, he wasn't entirely wrong, Lori. A maul is a lot like a sledgehammer with a dull blade on one side. A body can sharpen it, but then the real greenhorn would be showing, because it works a whole lot better dull : )
