The Mark Twain Lake is man-made lake here in Northeast Missouri. It is about 20 miles southwest of Hannibal. It was created by the Clarence Cannon Dam impounding the Salt River.
We have had record flooding and rain in this area this year. Right now the Mark Twain Lake is at record levels (639 feet) and they've opened the Dam to release some of the water. They are trying to bring the lake down about a half a foot a day. To achieve this, they are currently releasing 60,000 cubic feet of water a second. A SECOND!! The Corps of Engineers woman said that if we get more rainfall they may have to open it up to 78,000 cubic feet a second.
The Salt River valley is being flooded due to the release of water. The residents in the area were warned ahead of time, and several of the area campgrounds are closed.
