A new study released by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that about half of the diabetics surveyed report that they have arthritis. Though both diabetes and arthritis are common conditions, this is an even larger overlap than expected. In this video, Dr. Julie Silver from Harvard Medical School explores the link between the two.

Thanks for the timely reminder and the wonderful advice. Recovering from a heel spur (from too much walking on a paved trail), I considered taking Tylenol for it so that I could continue to walk, but I was toughing it out. I'll add the Tylenol regimen to the cross-trainers I now have in my shoes and keep going.

Very good information. My dogs have arthritis, but not diabetis. I was wondering if there was anything here for them. There was. The need to exercise as much as possible. Good advice for me too.

The connection between arthritis and diabetes could well be the oxidative stress caused by higher levels of radicals production and glycated proteins produced by poorly controlled diabetes which causes inflammation etc....What should be stressed here is that individuals with diabetes should be strictly controlling their blood sugar level and closely monitoring fluctuations. Ofcourse exercise id crusial to maintain blood glucose levels and important for muscle strength but would not alone control in a diabetic situation.

Had terrible weight problem and had gastric bypass almost one year ago. I'm down about 80 lbs., walk treadmill for a little over one hour each day (almost exactly four miles) and am now off my BP meds and the one diabetes pill. The reason I mention all of this is because in addition to Type II Diabetes, I've had several bouts of gout, which I understand to be a type of arthritis. My surgery seemed to aggravate the gout but I'm able to get in my walking (on a treadmill) daily and haven't had any more "full blown" attacks of the gout.
