"rock-n-roll star"
i look in the mirror, there's a glimmer in the my eye
you know its been a fight its been a long, long time
of planning, wishing, hoping, wondering and working so very hard
and to all the people who discouraged me
who tried to rip me to shreads and shatter my dreams
i went the distance to my heart been true
now i can finally say, "hey you!"
i'm a rock-n-roll star
i'm a rock-n-roll star
from the usa down to australia
all of europe, russia, mexico and africa
i'm a rock-n-roll star
mama can you see me from up above?
you know, i'm doing all the things that i've been dreaming of
i know if you were here, you'd whisper in my ear
"my son, i'm so proud of you"
i look in the mirror, there's a glimmer in the my eye
me-oh-my i think i'm gonna cry
but hey- i'm cool collected and i'm calm
i twist it up and shout it out, "hey mom!"
i'm a rock-n-roll star
i'm a rock-n-roll star
from antartica to south america,
china, ireland, japan, canada and india
i'm a rock-n-roll star

hey izzy... think u need an avatar pic on your profile... gonna send one to you. ;)
Nice use of color (when it appears, it's only mostly red, white, and blue). Also, I like the multi-screen effect and the jump-cuts. You seem to have created soemthing iconic here. I need to think about it more.
izzy

in regards to julie's comment...
one thing i have learned in my life is to have the heart and spirit of an idealist, but the mind and common sense of a realist.
ideally, i would love to believe that i am the greatest rocker to ever live and when i am on stage i feel like i am... and for a moment... i even believe it.
but when i am not on stage i look at my work and listen to it and know where i am in the long list of artists... ehem... i'm not in the top 100, you know. ;)
i have no problem admitting who the better band is... however, i would challenge gostation's front man to a challenge of live performance any day. i may not be the greatest songwriter, musician or singer, but i am one helluva crazy rock-n-roll front man! ;)
Vickie... thank you for the honesty! mucho appreciated!
and I'm starting to understand why we can vote more than once. This isn't any trouble to listen to again and again and the video sure doesn't hurt.
Dude, I hope you win this!
ceena... giiiiiirrrrlllll..... thank you, baby!
aw stephen, you're totally awesome man. thanx!
johnathan... thank you for the kind words! yeah, alot of folks say its catchy...kinda like a bad cold that just won't go away! heh-heh! ;)
kate... thank you much!
de... thanks for the compliments! glad you like the 'punk sound.' you know the 80's are making their lil' comeback and i thought i should be on board with a song that reflected my era... oohhh.... spilling my age there! ;)
mike... hey thanx, mate!
ann..... ehem.... continued in my next comment ;)
This video is remarkable for its marriage of images, lyrics, and rhythm. (Anyone who doesn't like film reviews might want to skip this comment).
You've created something iconic here, something that looked familiar to me the FIRST time I saw it. This video seemed familiar, I think, because it matches some of the pop culture images stuck in my subconscious mind. (In spite of the fact that I am not a pop culture fan and seldom watch music videos!).
This is an elegant visual distillation of musical pop culture. The first thing that hit me was TU's androgynous similarity, in this video, to Boy George and early Michael Jackson (back when he was still a handsome black guy.) The few times TU's face is shown, it's very two-dimensional and looks painted onto the screen, as if there is nothing behind the rock star facade. Unlike TU, who has a real life, I suspect Boy George and Michael Jackson are mostly facade, without much of a life behind their larger-than-life images.
The story of the star working at menial jobs and then quitting to follow his true ambition is well-told. Your use of multiple image layering and screen division is excellent. I love the multi-layered scene in which the star is looking at want ads. It's clear that he has spent a lot of time doing this. I also love the spot where the lyrics refer to looking in the mirror, and the screen image immediately doubles, adding a mirror image of itself.
You show great control and symbolic use of color. I feel that the climax of the video occurs when the star quits his restaurant job and steps out the door, to be showered by blue stars against a red brick wall. As your color choice suggests, the concept of a "Rock Star" was born in the USA, and this star's dreary black and white existence is replaced by a colorful fulfillment of his dreams.
I'm assuming that TU is the editor here, as the cutting is in excellent synch with the song's rhythms.
There are two subtext themes that I see. Being a rock star now means being a global star and a citizen of the world, as you point out by including the flags of mutiple countries. Also, as you point out with TU's androgynous look, sexual and gender differences are beginning to blur with the current generation. There aren't really sharp dividing lines anymore.
My only complaint is that I never got a GOOD look at TU's face, but perhaps you wanted it this way, as a pop star is a facade.
Great work, better than a lot of what I've seen on television. And the videos on your respective sites are excellent as well.
you mentioned you felt the video was iconic and familiar and that definitely was what i was going for. i was trying to give a taste of the 80's- okay maybe a lil' more than a taste- how about a good dose of the 80's, yeah!!! what is even more bizarre is that you mentioned two artists who have influenced me more than anyone else. when i wa a wee lad michael jackson and even more- boy george, they were heroes. i don't think the video itself or the song actually looks or sounds like them, but i find it unbelievable that you named those two artists. super insightful!
"a rock star born in the usa" how do you do that?
(hey, are you using some magic science mind reading here?! heh-heh)
and yeah... i was the editor. ;)
regarding the blurs of sexuality and gender, well you are 100% spot on with that also! if you recall, the 80's were very androgynous also and again, i wanted that 80's feel.
ann, you really get what we are doing. you are sensational and so intuitive. i cannot even begin to express my sincere thanks and gratitude. wow.
"ann m."--- just one more reason why gather rocks!!!!!
You're making me blush. Artists don't usually like art critics. I'm glad the review felt right.
I'd love to hear from your silent partner, D. Gauss. I left comments all over his page. The dog film you did together is amazing!
Maybe I should send D. Gauss an invitation to "A Place for Introverts" (One of my groups).
izzy... thank you, luv! you are so committed and that's why i love you girl!!!
cindy... girl.... you rock!!!
john r..... thank you man. i appreciate it. i was checking numbers out... not looking too good... but not terribly bad either... i dunno... i am having fun with all this. ;)
ann... I THINK YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahahaaaaaa! ann, really, we gotta stop sharing brain cells. that bitch, izzy, is CONSTANTLY sharing my brain cells!!!
ceena.... aw, girl! i'm turnin' red all over! thank you soooo mcuh! youa re so sweet!
I can't think of a nicer (or more unlikely) person to mind-meld with. The fact that I have picked up on so much of what you want to say in your video is a tribute to your art, which communicates clearly.
click on the red "vote" button on the first tracks banner right above all the comments but below the video screen. another window should pop up... just follow the instructions in that window. thanx!
john r.... class act?! me? naw. ;) heh-heh. thanx..
ann... i gotta say i am enjoying the weird connect going on here. but as far as my art communicating my message or concept clearly- not really- i think you just clearly understand it. there are a 'select few' that understand me and my art. folks either really like me or they really don't and it seems to be that way with my art... either they really get it and like it or they don't. you definitely get it... ehem... of course i'm not too sure what that says for you! ;) pwahahahaaa!
1 MORE VOTE 4 U BIG HOMEY!!! C U IN ROUND 2!!!
WELL, IM ABOUT HALF THE VOTES AS U, BUT WE'LL SEE!!!
B.S.! (I'd spell it out, but this discussion isn't flagged)
You have too many votes to get away with saying that a "select few" understand your art!
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrramona.... thank you again, luv!!!
nick.... thanx! thanx! thanx!
ceena.... hey back at you luv!
ann.... you are so good for me. thank you for everything!
john... you are so diligent. i cannot tell you how much it means to me!

Great poem you posted this morning!
A Soldier's Song
You got my vote.
