James, I used the 75x300 lens, that is how I captured my Red-tail Hawk with a snake in its beak.

Note: I do so understand how capturing the hawks are so spontaneous, I have such awe for them that I loose several seconds of shooting time while I compose myself. LOL... I love the majesty of birds of prey.
I've taken so many photos over the years if I have a camera in my hands it automatically is up and clicking before I realize I'm taking pictures, just done it so much it is second nature for me to not even think, just start clicking away...is why I was able to capture this one...if I had not been taking scenic shots would have had the 75-300mm on board and would have gotten a closer shot of it...

I never miss a shot, though some are quite a long way up. The Hawks soar so high I often become only an observer from the ground, from my window, I have better access to them soaring.
That photo of the Red-tail Hawk was taken in the park as I was walking my Beagles, the hawk had just snatched the snake, flew above our heads, and across a field towards some very tall trees. I snapped rapidly till it disappeared beyond the trees. I was still excited when I arrived home to upload the shots.
The one I posted was the best, it was the first, funny how that happens. Thanks for taking a look, that photo is also on Facebook. Happy shooting! Smiles...

John said it...
Terrific...
Have you ever seen a bald eagle? In Maine, we saw several years ago and now we see them in MA and NH.
We were in a motel. I was washing my face. In the mirror, I saw reflected a small plane that was flying over the area. I wondered why the 'small plane' did not make any noise.
Then you know it is a bald eagle.
This has happened several times since. Once in NH last year, driving...over head a 'small plane.'

I do remember the Eagles...
the eagles.
I hear thunder, maybe a good lightning storm is headed this way...later...
