This Sir Richard is an Oberhasli wether, three years old. Young Ivan has had a privileged life. Raised by Aunties and on tough momma, he was only required to defend his right to eat. He has flighty characteristics as I've only had wee hunks of time to work with him.
But he's game to wade through the deep snow with me, crosses streams and climbs logs well. And he knows how to forage. He'll make an excellent pack goat.
My daughter's young man helped me to construct a nice pack saddle and while home I'm weaving my first saddle blanket.

The Illuminated Rumi, or any Jelaluddin translated by Coleman Barks. Hardback gives you a lot more fiber. But paper's easier to pack.

just looked up Oberhasli. formerly " swiss alpine" great pack goats, pack abt 25% of their weight, make good pets...ohhh I miss my goats, Jack, Jill, Annabelle, Ned and abt 5 more. have fun..make him a nice warm saddle blanket,huh?

The myth that I was handed when first acquiring his mother as a kid, was that they originally migrated across the Asian Steppes with the Mongols. Milk, meat, cheese, pelts and great in rugged terrain (goat after all!). I like it.

They were brought to the U.S. from Switzerland in the fifties I believe.

You really had a good flock it sounds. I finally understand. I was not too keen on goats before these guys, but I find, I really enjoy the whole involvement.

They are beauties and yes, I think it takes a special .....? to enjoy goats but I found they not only provide milk, meat, cheese, pelts (didn't pack) but they are entertainment, sometimes curious clowns but pets also. Thank you for the info. Love to see a pict if you get him pack ready.
