Sunrise a year ago today on November 3, 2008 photographed through the window of my apartment, which overlooks a small lake and woodlands in a northwest suburb of Chicago. The halo around the sun resembles an incandescent light bulb, the kind that has been used as a symbol for an idea. I don't remember if I had any brainstorms that day. May all who view the image have many brilliant thoughts.

Thanks for your input. Since I moved here in August 2008, I have one grand view after another and my photo output has increased greatly. A lovely or interesting scene also distracts me from something else I'm doing. The amount of beauty in my life has increased, but my efficiency has decreased.

Good idea, and not only brilliant, but also common sense. Are you planning to go somewhere warm over the winter? The only place I'm going is to Southwestern Michigan, which may be more winterier than here. On the way there, we'll drive through Northwestern Indiana where I think you live.

Winning the lottery would help avoid fall, winter and spring up north. But no such luck yet. Yup, I-94 will take you just 7 miles south of the beach. But you've been here before.

I know. On days that it is sunny and I am up early enough, I spend a lot of time watching the sun run its course. I have a south-southeast view. Even after it's out-of-sight as it moves past an arm of the building I'm in, its rays shine past the arm onto the landscape I can see from my window.

I awaken early when I have insomnia, jet lag, or this past week, a time change. The lovely sunrises make up for the sleep loss.

In Fall, I set the clock back after getting up at 5am. Gives me an extra hour to do things.
