Ya know Dan? I had always assumed that serenity, beauty, all things 'knowing' was represented by the swan. And when the little ugly duckling grew up to be a beautiful swan, nobody ever told us gullable kids that stories seldom incorporate the whole truth. In fact, as a grown up, I was shocked and quite horrified to be chased on land by a very unbeautific beast. Yea, the Swan! Out of water they have short goblin like legs that barely support the upper body, and they walk like they have a huge load in their feathers. I may have retained an affinity for the big duck if it hadn't tried to eat me! Man they can be mean! I will always view them from way afar after that incident!

As they sat Peg, on the surface it all seems calm, but underneath their paddling to beat hell. lol I know the Canadian Geese around here can be downright ornery too..especially if they sense your scared. If you stand your ground they back off.

I have a photo of a swan and another of swans taken at our local reservoir and there is no background, no element other than swan and water. Your image has texture, environmental markers and character! I should speak with our DPW about their lack of aesthetics. :)

This was actually an old stone quarry at one time. The pink rock you see is Sioux Quartzite which is used in many of the old buildings in Sioux Falls. It and the property surrounding it were donated to the city and turned into a real nice peaceful spot, and habitat for waterfowl.

It is just lovely, Cambridge lacks imagination and a sense of aesthetics even though we are quite solid, financially, the City is also frugal. We have a $12 million slush and reserve fund and a four star bond rating, it is like pulling teeth to get them to provide anything other than grass and trees--no complaints their yet, some natural rock would be really nice. I have worked with the City on a few park projects and I would rather take on a search for hen's teeth than revisit that nightmare! Just small innocuous info! :)

Still, just love your photo! :)

Two thoughts came to mind as I saw this beautiful pic you have taken of the swan in the serene pond,Dan...thought I would share it .........
1st :-Swans have pair bonds that can last for life....Did you see the other of the pair around and also see how they bond during the day ??
2nd :- is the Swan ballets where the beauty of the swan is shown in dance form...I love it.

The swan is an elegant beauty in our world. Dan, you have captured the grace and power of the swan. I grew up in the country and in London beside 'Old Father Thames' where swans were omnipresent. I've always marvelled at their glory and respected their space in our world. Tchaikovsky's wonderful 'Swan Lake' is one of my favourite ballets.
