View through my apartment window at about 6:15 PM on Thursday, October 9. The setting sun to the right in the photo has painted the tops of the trees, which have not yet taken on their fall color, a brilliant orange. Although it had rained steadily for several hours in the afternoon, the sky seemed fairly clear at this moment. Is that a sundog on the right? Fifteen minutes later, the sky clouded up and stayed cloudy overnight.

Yes, sunsets awaken. They always get your attention. When I see a view like this, I can't ignore it--I have to drop everything to try to photograph it. Sometimes my windows are spotted from rain, snow, or an insect--then I just inhale it.

I appreciate and share your viewpoint. Most people don't think of Illinois as a place of beauty, but its Nature, like that of every place on earth, has both shaped people and been shaped by people. Often Nature got the short end of this relationship.

I agree. And around Chicago the devastation is terrible in some industrial areas. The plains (and scattered woodlands) have a beauty of their own, and part of that is the big sky.

"part of that is the big sky." I have a book by John Madson about the tall grass prairie, and I've kept it through several moves because I love prairies, and I love its title, Where the Sky Began: Land of the Tallgrass Prairie.

That looks more like a rainbow than a sun dog. Which direction were you facing? If toward the sun it would be a sun dog, if away from it, a rainbow.

The sun was streaming over the treetops from where it was setting in the (south)west, but the buildings on the right side don't allow me to actually see the setting sun--only the results on the sky in front of me. But I think I was facing the sun more than away from it.

My unit faces south. Because of the bay window and the openness to the east, I also have good southeast views. The southwest is blocked by the other arm of my building. I have no north views.

If you were facing south and the sun was setting, it'd be to your right. If this were a sun dog or halo phenomenon it would curve in that direction. Since it curves to the left, I'd say it's a rainbow. Also a sun dog or halo would be redder toward the inside, not the outside. So unless this is some unusual halo phenomenon I'm not aware of I'm going to say it was a rainbow.

You can feel free to take my conclusions as tentative. It's certainly possible there is a different phenomenon that I don't know about...the directions you mentioned don't quite seem compatible with a rainbow either...either way, it is attractive. I like how it subtly shows up against the sky.
