Jackie says some people feed them.
I remember now - they are nocturnal. It was the first time I've ever seen a racoon close up, it was bigger than I thought it would be.
Around my house, raccoons are out at all hours of the day and night, and they don't need a lot of encouragement to cadge for food. I was sure that the people who previously owned the house had been feeding them, because the 'coons would come up on my back porch landing and try to get in the door, even while I was standing there on the other side of the door. It seems I blamed the previous owners unfairly, because they are still doing it 17 years later! I don't feed them on purpose, but it's not unusual to go out to refill the bird feeders and find a 'coon standing at my back door waiting for me, because they know there will be dropped seeds at the feeders.
