Statue of Roland located in Bremen, Germany -- Summer 2009 Based on The Song of Roland, or La Chanson de Roland, a mid 11th century French poem depicting the exploits of Roland and The Twelve Peers. Deemed as a precursor to the Arthurian legend, The Song of Roland is rumored to have been composed by William the Conqueror's bard. More likely, similar to Homeric epic poetry it is a compilation of several contributors.
