They are mass-flushed on a set schedule. When there's an event going on, that's probably every few minutes. Other times, it's more like a few times a day. The key to the secret flush timer is carried by the troll in my comment above, suspended around his neck on a cord made of blonde hairs picked from the discarded scrunchies of sorority girls.

How did the troll who lives in the full trash can, next to the sink, below the empty paper towel dispenser in a men's room under an enormous sports stadium at a midwestern university get discarded scrunchies of sorority girls? Did he have to leave his trash can, or were they discarded in the men's room?

The scrunchies of sorority girls, having been worn directly on the heads of said girls and subsequently lost or thrown out, have been curiously magnetized in such a way that they must, by their nature, seek out the places where men gather. The scrunchies just seem to keep turning up in men's rooms, although no one can say with absolute certainty how they got there.

Not technically scrunchies, but I have a lot of ponytail holders that the cat has stolen and made into items to be played with and/or fetched.

Yeah, then some idiot would start spamming the group with photos of scrunchies found underneath refrigerators, and ruin it for everyone. That, in a nutshell, is why we can never have anything nice around here.
