And the undergarments necessary to look as good as she does in it.
She was from New Orleans ~
The Painting created a SCANDEL at the Paris Salon when it was exhibited
because originally one of the straps of her dress was painted to show that it had fallen off her shoulder ~ Sargent had to re-paint it to show it "properly"up on her shoulder.
I believe this lady's first name was ,Eugenie ~
Sargent said she was one of his most difficult "sitters" ~
{rich - moody and spoiled as all Hell !}
Your icon is terrific. The thing about Sargent's painting that I really love is how well he draws with paint... his stuff never looks like it was drawn first, then painted. He is a master of fluid paint but with exquisite control. Amazing.
She looks "Alabaster" because she is covered in lavendar powder inorder to achieve just that effect ~ only her ear isn't covered with powder ~ Why? ~ I do not know.
This is awesome! At first glance, it almost looked like a photograph! What control over paint Sargent has! The powder and ear without powder is very interesting!
I would have loved to see the first version with the strap off the shoulder! I just love the era...the clothing, and attitude of the portrait is great!
Blessings,
Isis
You however intrigue and I would like to know you!
