Black-eyed peas for New Year's Day - a la Tonia. Since living with Debbie I have been required to adopt the Southern tradition of black-eyed peas on New Years Day. The first couple of years it was just a can of beans warmed up and served as a side dish. I have been trying to get a little fancier with it and so this year cooked the beans, kielbasa (in place of ham hocks), scallions (to replace collard greens) and Rotel (my favorite canned product - diced tomatoes and green chilies) in a gravy that was made from the juices of the chicken I roasted last night. Served it over cubed home made cornbread and there you go - a Southern tradition adapted. Sending out wishes for peace, joy and prosperity to all.

Oh, you are turning southern, Tonia! Yours looks prettier than mine but I did use the healthy choice sausage. No cornbread though, that's one thing that sticks in my throat. (TMI there, no?) A spinach salad is my green. Yummmm... and great photo!

Faith - I do believe that I am getting just a little more Southern every day. This was actually pretty good, and it made Deb happy. What more could I ask for?

One of the best things about the south is the food, with the exception of black-eyed peas, errrrrrrrrrr, on my palatte these "things" taste like dirt, don't ask me why, but they do? I'd rather eat liver...hahaha!

hi girl - it looks purty for sure!! I made cornbread, cabbage, brown rice, black-eyed peas and sweet potatoes. I used the whole bag so I have loads left over - just for the husband, I threw in a ham hock. He's going to eat on that for a few days! I make beans every Monday - it's an old Louisiana tradition - red beans and rice on wash day! Salud.

Well now Rose, I had to replace the collard greens - they just don't agree with me :-) Of course, I suppose I could try mustard greens sometime. Sounds like your meal was quite a Southern feast.

This looks good! I think I'll try this soon. My husband loves Kielbasa... I'll have to separate a portion for me before I add all of the Rotel. It gets too spicy for me if I use a whole can, while he adds Tabasco to spice things more!

I don't like black eyed peas, but this sure does look good. Nice photo, lots of great colors.
