thanks - i'm in the hospital and using a wifi connection (i actually tapped into their system..... ) i'm here for a week or so... and im sick and sad and etc etc. somehow this photo seemed appropriate. Grief is a hard thing to capture on film, yet this seemed the closest i could get....

Oh... grief, yes that is what I sensed as I first stared into the photograph. The world never seems ashamed of handing out these tokens of sorrow and grief. One can only hope, Xanthe, that you are getting your rest and have reached the sad step of going numb so your mind and soul can recuperate. I know numbness is a sad thing to wish for, but maybe then your pillow will become your comfort and not a sponge for your tears. Be well my dear friend.

... you're right about the world never being 'ashamed'.... and worse, people do not face up to their share or responsibility for the hurting... I am resting, Richard, but i do want to be numb just to not feel for a while. Sometimes, I think, we go numb because it is the only way to survive a hurt so great that you might quite literally go into some kind of shock - I know that for me, events of late have set me into emotional shock, and that is to say nothing of the very real and measurable physical repercussions .... Grief really can hurt the heart in a tangible way - i never thought that truly possible....

Hi Abbie:

It's not a great photograph of me, but i posted it because i felt it truly captured the moment and that is vital to me as a documentarian who believes in verite - not happy happy snapshots all of the time, because life is not happy happy all of the time; it's so full of complexities and grey areas and i want to catch that as well - it presents a truer portrait of the subject.
