Thank you Lori - I plan on getting real ricepaper for this kind of work.:-) I was astonished yesterday when I realised that prices for quality calligraphy online were the same as for quality oil paintings.

background is normal watercolourpaper I am sad to say - the photo took this colour by itself due to lights or maybe the "white" paper has some cold tones in it that the camera picked out. But I do agree the bluish tone suits the image.

i agree with the others this is a nice direction for you to go in. i have heard that the chinees letters are a really hard thing to do, you seam to have it down quite well

I've often looked at framed sets of these in the stores. You know.... Faith, Love, Hope.... Maybe you should think about making a set of these in like the 5 x 7 size...fame them and see how much you could get for them. I know I would pay a bit more than the store prices...knowing that an artist-friend had done them.

If you are really interested in this, you might be able to find books on how to write proper Chinese calligraphy. There are 8 writing techniques. They are not just brush and paint. I don't know if the instruction books would be in English (or whichever language you use), though. I am willing to help but I can't demonstrate to you over the Internet.

I know it is much more complicated than simply using a brush and paint and I have already bought two books and browsed and printed tons of info from the Net. My problem is TIME and really purpose.

You see, I am not all together sure that I am really interested into this as a limited skill to perfect. My goals are to practice brush strokes and "seeing" the beauty and pratly to learn to read and write the most used kanji. I have considered you see, working in Asia and then it would be useful in that connection as well.

I have also been very interested in the traditional medicine and culture of asia since I was young and that is part of it.

I am very grateful for your offer and will probably contact you one of these days.

At once Selene I thought you meant something very special when you talked about the 8 techniques but serching I found only 8 basic strokes which I knew about and which I will practice. I wondered whether you meant 8 styles then and am not yet sure.

Sorry, I guess I used the wrong word. The 8 basic strokes is what I meant. But they are no simple strokes, even if you call them "basic". It could take a long time to master the shape, the power, the composition, and the structure of them. Either way, I don't mean to say that you didn't know what you were doing. I hope you weren't offended or anything. I am always excited (and sometimes too eager to offer my opinion) when I see someone (non-Chinese) interested in Chinese culture. And yes, I realized now that you weren't really interested in Chinese per se (you were writing Japanese), but you must know that the Japanese Kan Ji were developed from Chinese. So, I am still excited.

If I don't reply soon, that's because I have limited time on line. I will never not want to answer your question or ignore you. :)

I saw your chinese character icon and followed it back here. I love chinese calligraphy, and recently bought a book and brush set for chinese painting but haven't been brave enough to try it yet. I found a link to your blogspot http://mtv65.blogspot.com/ and really enjoyed what you've done. I'm not an artist already, so my practice paintings won't be as beautiful as yours but I have to start sometime. :) PS my great grandpa came to South Dakota from Oppdal, Norway.
