St. Petersburg is certainly the most beautiful city in Russia, and one of the best in the world. This past visit to Russia was my sixth. I won't have my travel writings ready quite yet, but I do plan to post a link to a previously published travel series I wrote called Vodka in the Sun today. Check it out!

I did, Tom! I've been to St. Petersburg about four times in the past 12 years (have visited Russia six times). I've found that phonetic translations change. I've seen both Pterfof and Peterhov. Another example, Nizhni Novgorod, Nizhniy Novgorod and Nizhny Novgorod. Although I've spent time in Moscow and St Pete, most of my time has been in Nizhni, where I lived.

How did you find yourself in Russia? I was a college exchange student the first time, and returned so many times due to the friends (family) that I met there. Russia's always been like a second home to me.

No, Ana, but I have been there several times. I was just in Russia again earlier this year, mostly in Moscow and Nizhniy Novgorod. The last time I made it to St. Petersburg was 2002. Another trip is long overdue!

Now I see why I got an invitation to join your group--you probably read my first chapter from "Why Birches Are White" that takes place in St. Petersburg...? I was born and raised there, and I agree with you--it IS one of the most beautiful romantic cities in the world. I'm looking forward to reading your notes about the trip and discussing whatever about the "ground of my roots". Elena
