They do bite hard - if you let them. I was bitten once by the macaw I used to have and I quickly learned how to prevent those bites! When you have the chance to observe them, you can see how there powerful jaws can crack the shells of even the hardest nuts.
I wonder why some of natures most beautiful creatures are dangerous. A female hummingbird has been visiting my condo balcony all summer. I mentioned to my daughter I would like to see the ruby throated male once in a while. "No you don't, Mom," said she. They are mean and nasty, and drive the females away. They are very territorial.
Perhaps it is because while they were endowed with great beauty, they were also left to the mercies of many other creatures so had to develop a mean streak to survive?
Good answer Nanci. We did Bird Adoption for The Real Macaw. We babysat a Macaw for awhile-VERY destructive took off our window molding. Birdds aer also a ong long term commitment, people don't undertand this
