I will indeed Little Red. I am a little drained right now. It was a powerful experience for me. I went with the expectation that I would leave the workshop with one of three things: Validation, Inspiration, or Direction. I got all three. Such a generous man and also such a generous group of poets I was with, all with such different perspectives.

Isn't he fantastic? He has a very kind soft spoken demeanor, but a very powerful presence nonetheless.

James, that is stunning verse. Such feeling of peace and unhurried ease. You have encapsulated the perfect camping, or cabin trip morning. I'll come back to meditate on this one some more.

Hey Mike. I love this poem. I have always thought it strange that we cover ourselves in foreign scents. Excellent writing. ~ side note: The poem kind of reminds me that a dog's favorite Halloween costume is a spirited roll on a dead fish, preferably a day or two old. That's why they look up at you afterwards, wagging away, to see if you still recognize them or if they fooled you.

Hi Chris, of course I am not being literal. That would make me either a crappy poet or a very bad man. I hope I am not either. ~ But there are shades of understanding. Knowing that something is going on does not, unfortunately, elicit compassion automatically. In fact it has been more often the exception rather than the rule. That needs to be the next step in human evolution in my opinion. Compassion, in a sense, erases the barriers we hide behind and allows us a deep empathetic response for each other. My poem seeks to say that our understanding of each other's experience must undergo a transformation that supersedes our ability to turn away with the excuses that support the idea that we can do nothing. I found Lily Yeh's example to be profoundly moving. She says at the opening of her talk that when "the call" came, she almost could not go because she was afraid. But she knew that if she did not go "the best of her would die, and the rest would amount to nothing". This is a profound calling to service and compassion. It is the inspirational stories of saints like these that push us to be open to our own calling to compassion. I believe she understands the things I spoke of in a deeply personal way without having to have been subjected to them directly herself. I also found it interesting that she talks about her own weakness as being transformative because she needed those she sought to help her realize her vision. This is powerful wisdom.
