Congrats on your resolution! I have had the same dream. My husband and I invested in high quality digital video equipment after asking a number of successful documentary filmmakers what they use or what they like. We took a loan out for about $15K to purchase a camera, lights, mikes, accessories and even a powerful Mac and Final Cut Pro.

I began a documentary about miscarriage then got pregnant myself so it has been on hold. We may have a project this summer flying around Alaska interviewing Native Alaskans about traditional storytelling. We're also going to take a class in Final Cut Pro at a local Apple store.

My only experience with filmmaking was in 2005 when I was asked to produce a 12-part documentary series for a local PBS station based solely on my reputation as a writer. That was the most awesome learning experience, and I got paid to do it. If you really want a great opportunity, go to your local PBS station and see what positions they have available. Internships there really do provide lots of hands on work.

The Apache is in storage in Lander, Wyoming for now - didn't know if it would have made the trip from Wyoming to Alaska along the Alaska Highway. I miss it so much - so many incredible memories. Also, the Berts both passed away in the last year so I really want to have something more to remember them by.

Thanks, Marsha. It was unbelievably hard for me, the loss of my beloved dog. He was like my first baby. I actually read this essay on the radio - that was one of the hardest things I've ever done on the air. But it was really therapeutic to do it.

Mine is GRGGAL. People pronounce it Gurgle. But it stands for Greg's Gal (my husband). Here in Alaska, every other car has a vanity plate. For a few days, my husband tried to jot down every one he saw and I did the same. I ended up with dozens. I've never seen so many vanity plates in one place!

Good question! Let's see...it must be around 1965, I was probably a year old or so. My mom said that I was born with an incredible amount of hair. "Even the postman was jealous," she'd tell me. The postman, it turns out, was bald. Now that I have my own daughter (7 months old), I look at this photo of me and wonder how much she looks like me. She sure does smile really big like this. But she is relatively bald. Okay, she has a little hair now, but not much.

I was wondering what kind of reaction I might get to this essay. My gun is actually in safe storage, and I haven't used it in quite a while. And now that I've had a baby, it does make me think a little more about having guns in the home. Of course, my husband is a hunter and has a gun safe filled with guns.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I miss my RV which is in storage in Wyoming at the moment. Hope to get back to it soon or to get another one in the meanwhile. I'll post more soon. Right now, I'm trying to get my new Group to work - roadtrips.gather.com - for some reason it won't let me in.

Hi Kevin - well, I established the group as public and open when I first set it up. I turned off Guarded setting. It still does not show up as one of My Groups.

But if you go to Groups and Find Groups, you will see it there several times with an icon. When I try clicking on it to access it, I still get that message that my access is denied. But if I click on edit, I can edit the description, icon, settings, etc.

And I verified again that it is totally open to the public.

Hmmm...now what?

Thanks Kevin - I think it worked! Now another question: I just created a Group called Road Trips (roadtrips.gather.com) and got a strange, long error message. The group does exist now. However when I try to access it, I get this message:

group unavailable
You either do not have permission to see this group or it has been deleted. If the group is private you must be signed in for permission to view this.

I didn't delete it. It doesn't show up as one of My Groups. How can I access this new group that I've created??

Hi Kevin - you suggested that I post my article on blog content to some of the other relevant Gather spaces by "re-publishing" it to them. How do I do that exactly?
