All I know is we need a lot more of everyday heroes today. Usually the larger than life heroes are created by media and depending upon the mood it has the capability to exponentially multiply. Michael Jackson may have been a hero to some people and to others he was a goat!

Election slogans like 'Yes we can' to get people fired up is one thing ...governing from a cess pool is a whole other game. We need to drain the cess pool........start changing the politicians one at a time with our votes. Unfortunately Americans have become very complacent about our own democracy..... it is at its own peril.

Alice - Kudos for the article. While I believe that the political system is very corrupt, it would take a while to bring about change. Unfortunately for us we are going thru the worst recession and financial collapse from greedy bankers. It would take some time to recover, Americans are not a patient lot...if things get real bad we will see people on the streets protesting. I think we should vote all incumbents out in the next election.

As people in this country age, we will be facing unprecedented dilemas, economic will most certainly play a big role.

I agree with your title and its premise. I have travelled a lot in my life and have had the good fortune of meeting people from many different cultures. Pain, sufferings and reactions to it often varies. Having a good support system of family, friends and in many cases organized religion? ;) helps us deal with it. I think pain and suffering is good medicine for our spiritual and personal growth....sounds very sadistic...

A very thoughful article. The pandora's box has been opened, we can expect the good, the bad and the ugly out of it. Life will not be secure and safe anymore..... so be sharp witted and nimble...things can change in the blink of the eye and change will be the constant.......will we become nomadic again, looking for work in all sorts of places ;)
