Connecticut is very close on actually a few races. Nancy Johnson, who has been in there for 24 years, was once winning huge majorities, is now close. 2 other seats could change parties, one in the senate

Sometimes I feel like it is so easy for middle and upper class people to look at the lower classes and say: This America, where they should be able to climb the corporate ladder and live the American dream, or whatever, but as I have debated with others on this subject, this is not always possible.

There are many situations where financial greatness would only come to a person after they overcame superhuman odds. When children are growing up in dangerous cities, with a single parent working two jobs just to feed her child/children, there isn't always time or money for college and the future. I know this seems like a bit of an urban stereotype, but there are situations (not all) in which this is true. I go to a school in Hartford, a city with a fair amount of lower-class families, and a vast majority of the students have their lunches free, because they are not able to pay the full price of $1.50, or even the reduced price of 40 cents. Most of these kids are working as much as they can as soon as they are 16, and often before. They cut classes to get to the fast food chains and small shops where they earn roughly minimal wage. When they leave high school, I think many of them will not even address the college issue, working 40 hours a week or more just to help support themselves and their family.

Where is there room in this for improvement? How can someone better their life if all their time is consumed?

I understand in some situations it is possible, with the right help, and the right opportunities, but saying lower class are lazy or incapable because of their difficulty self-improving is violently wrong.

The death penalty. *Whistles* Loaded topic. Personally it seems like an abomination to me. I'm pretty sure most religions and philosophies of life would agree with me there, but, at times unfortunately, our nation is separated. So, on a political level, I still think its wrong. Mainly, because, after separating church and state, this life is all there is. Life on earth. When we choose to end it, we are sending people to what they are not ready for and often, do not deserve. There are those who are innocent who are put to death, and that is worse than the original crime committed by someone else. There is also the disturbingly large percentage of ethnic minorities who are put to death. The way to justice is not from destroying our problems, but by changing them into positive things. The correction facilities in America are supposed to teach people that bad things will not be tolerated, and hopefully that they won't repeat actions. But the death penalty is not forgiving or constructing. Recently, there was a man who was on death row for several years, as most are. During this time, he had completely changed. He had become a loving member of a society that wouldn't accept him, and the president chose not to pardon him. This cannot continue.

There's definitely a difference between supporting the war and supporting the troops if you look at it a certain way. I don't support the war at all. War is killing people, hurting people, changing things even if it takes murder to do so. One way of supporting troops is to hope they succeed. I don't do that. I don't hope your son, or any soldier, successfully kills anyone. However, for all those in war, I hope for their safe return, on our side or otherwise.

Man oh man, did I join the right group. I've seen so much conservative christian hate on this site I was a little hesitant to join this one, but even the people who disagreed with me are advocating peace, except in extreme circumstances.

The books are excellent pieces of literature, but truthfully described as wordy. If you can get past the first part of Fellowship, most people are hooked enough to be able to read the rest.
I read the books first, and I definitely don't regret it.
