I have read three books without reviewing them here. My bad. I owe reviews for:

Black Rednecks and White Liberals, by Thomas Sowell

I will get these reviewed for all to see within a week.

OMG, I am speechless... almost. I really put you through it, didn't I? I'll try to not do that again any time soon. It is so wonderful to be so loved, how could I not stick around for a while to enjoy it?
I am glad you have so many good memories of your childhood. I remember most of those things you mention. Did you recall that your brother Josh worked with me to assemble that waterbed when you were nine? Remember the Asia tour with Josh and Rebekah (of course you do!) and the meeting with Mother Theresa in Calcutta? As a father, I often look back at my work as a parent and think of the things that I could have done better - with all of you kids. Thanks for giving me a good hard look at the good stuff!
And I cannot tell you how proud I am of your writing skills. Keep doing it - please. (Josh, Rebekah - and Adina - this means you, too!) Isn't it something how all of my kids have writing in their blood? Must come from the reading that you all did as children and from your mother and me reading to you.

Whatever his reason for admitting it, I give him credit for his honesty. Perhaps under other circumstances he would have concealed it, but he didn't do so here. Good for him. Most deny their prejudices, and Mel did not.

As for the question about whether or not the government spends our tax money wisely, of course they do not.

Would a gift of $15k+ have a significant impact on homelessness in America? I don't believe that it would. Their problems, for the most part, run far deeper than lack of funds. They need to be educated in a different set of survival skills. Or they need to get off of drugs. Or they need to be willing to report to work on time every day. Or any number of other things that a fat handout will not provide them. Simplistic solutions are not the answer.

Foreign aid to Israel and Egypt has no bearing whatsoever on how the government addresses homelessness. Uncle Sam gave away about 1.3 trillion dollars in transfer payments last year. Another three billion for the homeless would be a drop in that bucket. Thus, the anti-Semitic aspect of the article was Mel's implication that our aid to Israel is depriving America's homeless of desperately needed aid which could transform their lives. It is not.

I am a new invite to this group - possibly a mass invitation - but was intrigued to see what form the discussions of "American values" would take.

Interest in helping homeless persons is certainly an American value that I can support. However, when an admitted anti-semite tries to tie the plight of our homeless to American support of a vital ally, I have to wonder where the reasonable voices are. Mel, your honesty in owning your prejudices is refreshing in this day and age (most persons deny their prejudices), and that explains why you choose to make a blanket accusation against Jews on Gather based on the actions of a single Jew.

Everyone here is intelligent enough to realize, however, that there is no connection between the two issues that you are trying to conflate here. Both are worthy of discussion, of course. What should we do about the 189,210 homeless in America? Should we be giving foreign aid money to Israel and Egypt? Two issues, two discussions. Unless, of course, one has an agenda to connect them, as you have admitted that you have. In my experience most people do not share this agenda. I would expect that this group likewise does not.

My opinion of tattoos is that they are a statement about who the wearer is and how s/he wishes to be perceived, by self and others. But further than this, a tattoo becomes a part of the wearer as well, and exerts a real influence on who s/he is. Thus, it is well that they are not indulged as entertainment. A Tibetan "Om" is as good a choice for a tattoo as one might make.

Mr. Muggs, I take it from your comment above that you believe there to be a significant chance that there will be no national elections held next month. May I ask what you consider the odds to be that there will be no elections? Will you place a bet with me if I accept your odds?
