Restrictions to free speech is just as much a conservative sin as it is a liberal one. Talk about race and the left will go after you, talk about sex and the right will go after you. When it comes to "freedom" both sides are hypocrites!

Are you talking about the Religious Right whose selective interpretations of the Bible says they have a duty to force their pro-violence anti-sex "values" on the rest of the public by force? Or are you talking about the ivory tower elitist Left who believe that they could change the world into a socialist utopia by forcing attitudinal change in an unwilling public?

I really don't like either party, they are both hypocritical. Anything negative one party says about the other can be with a couple of word changes can be turned around in reverse.

Democrats: Its OK to censor books and media for their racial content, but otherwise there should be no censorship of ideas.
Republicans: Its OK to censor books and media for their sexual content, but otherwise there should be no censorship of ideas.

Republicans: We must get rid of the constitutional right to choose abortions, because it leads to premature deaths of fetuses.
Democrats: We must get rid of the constitutional right to bear arms, because it leads to premature deaths of people.

Republicans: Democrats have no ideas to end terrorism, fight the war in Iraq, protect the border, or save social security, all they do is say NO to our ideas.
Democrats: Republicans have no ideas to solve the health care crisis, cut the budget deficit, protect good paying jobs, or save the enviromnent, all they do is say NO to our ideas.

Republicans: When the Democrats were in power, they tried to battle poverty by throwing billions of dollars into government welfare programs, which thanks to inefficient bureacracies resulted in only a fraction of the money ever got to the people who needed it.
Democrats: Now that the Republicans are in power, they try to battle poverty by throwing billions of dollars into corporate welfare programs in the hopes it would create new jobs, which thanks to corporate greed resulted in very few actual jobs, at least in this country.

The Republicans could care less about the 4th and 9th ammendments, the Democrats dont care about the 2nd and 10th.

Right now the Republicans are in power, and they are doing a crappy job, that is all that is important. The truth is, the years that the Democrats ran everything (the Carter years, the early Clinton years) they did a crappy job too.

It should not be surprising that the best years in the last few decades were years when one party controlled the Executive brance and the other party controlled the Legislative.

When it comes to the Left vs Right, I vote neither!!

The other day, I heard a religious leader defending Bush's stand on torture. All I could think was that the "religious right" has completely sold out their principles for 30 pieces of silver. Danforth is right, the issues that the "religious right" care about do not mean crap when you look at the big picture. The Republicans in power dont want Roe Vs. Wade to be overturned, because they would lose their most important wedge issue. Public opinion on evolution, gay marriage, prayer in school, and many other issues is drifting away from the "religious right". I'd put money on gay marriage ammendments in Wisconsin and Arizona both going down in defeat this year.

Once upon a time, a "Christian" was seen as an upstanding citizen who cared for the needy and followed Jesus's example to love one another. They were admired by non-christians for their dedication and selflessness.

Now "Christians" are seen as superstitious homophobes who write complaint letters to the FCC. They cut themselves off from the community in a cult like fashion, only listening to Christian music, attending Christian schools, eating at Christian restaurants, etc. Now of course most Christians are not that bad, but that has become their reputation, and it is bad for mainstream Christians to even be associated with the "religious right", but they lack the political will to change.

The truth of the matter is we are starting to see the waning days of the religious right's political power. I wish it would come faster.

Here's my thoughts:

There is no logical reason to have a death penalty at all anymore. Every argument that hasn't been disproven, are logical fallacies, mostly fallacies of tradition (we have always had capital punishment in the past and its in the constitution) or fallacies of emotion (they deserve to die for their crimes).

Is it a deterrent? Nope. The US is the only country in the Western Hemisphere with a death penalty, and our crime and murder rate is just as bad as countries without the death penalty.

Is it cost effective? Nope. Numerous reports have been released saying the cost of court time for automatic death penalty appeals outweighs the cost of incarceration for life.

Is it for Justice? Nope. If it were just, how come African Americans, who make up 10% of the population, make up half the population on death row? How come males are far more likely to get the death penalty than women for the same crime? And over 90 people put on death row in the last 25 years were later exonerated, a possibility more likely since if you are innocent, you are not likely to accept a plea bargain to a lesser offense.

Is it moral? The Pope doesn't think so, nor do most liberal protestant churches, nor do most secular humanist organizations, nor does any western nation outside of the US. The second largest country outside the US with a death penalty is Iran.

This has got to be one of the dumbest pieces I have read in quite a while.

Evolution is not an issue to be debated or voted on, its a provable fact that is accepted by credible scientists of many faiths the world over.

ID is not science, not even close. At best it is a philosophical way of thinking, at worst it is religious indoctrination which has no place in schools.

Let me just say that my comments above represent only the first of four aces in my hand, and in the near future I'll reveal the other three. I just want to explore this community a bit before jumping in big.

So a sneak peek of what I have on this subject.

Marus, I bet that many of the scientists who believe in evolution, also believe in God, and even are actively religious. Most people, including myself, see no conflict between believing in God and accepting evolution. One is physical and one is metaphysical.

The only people that seem to have a problem are the fundamentalists who take the Bible literally. They are a small minority of religious people who use deceptive tactics and logical fallacies to mislead the public into thinking ID has intellectual merit, when it really doesn't.

And Jerry, you and I are possibly on the same wavelength, just slightly out of phase.

Lets just say I believe that spirituality plays an important role in the evolution of humans... who are still evolving by the way.

Evolution A Theory in Crisis published in 1986 - Most of the ideas in this book have been largely discredited especially in the last 10 years of DNA research.

Darwin's Black Box got a scathing review in Scientific American by none other than Martin Gardner

Behe, Dembski, and Wells are all employed (in fact they lead) the Discovery Institute a Seattle based organization with strong ties to Evangelical Christianity.

If these are the only scientists you got in the ID camp, its a pretty weak lot.

Shall I start reciting the credentials of the hundreds of thousands of Biologists, Geneticists, Geologists, Paleontologists, Archaelologists and Zoologists who think ID is pretty much garbage?
