I never cared that much for Joan Crawford. She had a lot of presence on the screen but she left me cold.

Never saw Cushing as Holmes. I should look for the movies. I liked John Wayne for the wrong reasons. His character always seemed to me to be painfully shy and insecure. His behavior around women was downright strange. The ability to shoot people and beat them up struck me as overcompensation. He would have been great as a serial killer or a gangster.

I used to have a lot of fun inserting Cainelike pauses into my speech until my wife convinced me that she really would kill me if I didn't stop. My voice is pitched in the same register as Caruso's so I can sound really pompous in almost exactly the same way.

I guess if the choice is only among rackets, naturopathy has much to recommend it. Heck, maybe I should go for Orgone Therapy or monkey glands.

It's true that the mandatory buy in is a large gift to insurance companies. $15 K a year in premiums is a gross exaggeration.

Nothing I've seen in either of these articles convinces me that there's something inherently wrong with religion, Christianity in particular. People managed to pervert the teachings of Christ pretty effectively though. Things like a church hierarchy, punishment for heresy, and sanctimony are human failings, not inherent to religion.

Christ had a simple and beautiful moral message. I wish people had stopped with that.

I'm an agnostic myself. I'm not much of a joiner and don't have a powerful need to know "why." My curiosity is more inclined toward "how" questions. Purpose isn't that important to me.

One attractive thing about cats for a lot of people is that they sleep most of the time. Another is that cats don't apply their intelligence to much of anything unless they get obsessed. Ferrets definitely are higher maintenance. :)

This is quite convincing. I believe LBJ once said about Ford, "That old boy is so dumb he couldn't pour piss out of a boot if they had the instructions printed on the heel." There's something about the Texan language. :)

I'm wondering if J. B.'s hit "Don't Be a Dropout" is part of an earlier deal with the Establishment, an attempt to divert young people from the riots that were sweeping the country at the time.

And perhaps not. I was born in California. I have a birth certificate. Oops, maybe it's not a vault copy. :) It happened at Peralta Hospital on Pill Hill in Oakland. The hospital became part of some monster medical chain quite a while ago. My wife, on her father's side is 3rd generation native Californian. Her mother came from S. Dakota though. :)

I think the language is Recursive Babelfish.

Dogma, Chinatown, Cyrano de Bergerac (with Depardieu,) the French version of Beauty and the Beast by Cocteau, LA Confidential, the British Peter Sellers movies before The Mouse that Roared, Dr. Strangelove, Oscar and Lucinda, The Return of Martin Guerre, the entire Thin Man series, everything by W. C. Fields, pre-MGM Marx Brothers, The Big Sleep, Murder My Sweet (the version of Farewell My Lovely with Dick Powell,) Freaks, the Truman Capote bio with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Gray Gardens, almost everything by John Waters except for Cecil B. Demented...

I'm also a borderline obsessive Monty Python fan and, even though I'm crazy about Basil Rathbone, I think Jeremy Brett from the '80s British TV series was the best Sherlock Holmes ever. I like documentaries by Wiseman and Errol Morris too.

It's a geek pun. There's a group that's been producing open source software under the name GNU since the late '70s or early '80s. They're not really an organized group but all GNU software uses the same license which essentially allows people to modify it as long as it's made freely available and not sold. GNU is an acronym for the phrase "GNU's not UNIX," a jab at the UNIX operating system. It's also an infinite regression, like mirrors on walls that face each other. Definitely pure geek humor.

The Inquisition wasn't nearly as efficient as modern dictators or plague or typhus for that matter. Investigation and prosecution of heretics isn't a very savory occupation regardless.
