Voldemort isn't a bad example. I think the Lone Power is a better one, in all truth. She humanizes him to a great extent, and that helps the reader truly grasp what his motivations might be. He's "evil" because he's too damn proud to admit that he screwed up and ask his fellows to forgive him his mistakes and arrogance.
