"Kids will fight if they think they can gain power???"

I homeschool, but I do not view my relationship with my child as a power struggle. I find this view heartbreaking. At some point, children learn from the adults around them that life is about having power over others, but they don't have to -- *we* don't have to -- see it that way. It can also be about respecting others' needs, respecting others' power, and honoring their own power.

Thanks, Richard! I think the name came first... like a distillation of the thoughts and feelings that led to the poem. It was as if my shoulders were bearing up against an awesome weight, which also felt weightless at the same time... Something like that... back to poem, eh? :-)

I especially love your first, leading line, Mona!

And while I don't consider myself a "humanist", I do believe in people, and our fundamental goodness. We can do such awful things, but also so many amazing, grace-filled, courageous things... particularly when no one would expect it of us.
