Yes, sadly, this does happen everywhere.
Gather may not be set up as a match-making site, but I have been hit on inappropriately here more times than I care to remember. (not talking about nice men that I'm just not interested in that way - talking about totally inappropriate comments/messages from men I don't know...)
I do have a myspace account and have never had trouble there - I use their privacy controls that keep my profile and actions private.
Interesting that the myspace woman was convicted for breaking tos by submitting untruthful and inaccurate information. Gather has similar wording in their tos.

And...on a related note....
Not all of those sex offenders are pedophiles - many many many sex offenders are guilty of crimes against adult women.
It isn't only kids who need to be safe online.
