One of my favorite motivational songs is Ghetto Child,by Joe. the chorus "Just because I'm a ghetto child, I won't live down to your expectations", sends chills down my spine. An awesome song that I could never figure out why the record company did not promote it well, (if at all).

You know Dee Dee, it is so obvious that most of us African Americans are generally incredibly disconnected from our African history. What is more unsettling however, is how little that concerns so many of us. What happens that makes a people so uninterested in their own historical background? Other people here in America are (rightfully) proud keepers of their heritage. I get that slavery has erased many of the specifics of our individual family experience, but our experience as a people is well documented.

I intend for Willie's Dad to be a children's story. I am developing the characters, in part because I intend to write a series of stories with Willie as my central character. I am developing the characters in large part to prepare myself for the next stories, to kind of help me determine the characters motivation, and make them believable. The stories themselves are centered around this particular child's point of view, and the backstories are not appropriate for young children. I could picture older children, as well as adults, understanding and identifying with them. It is certainly not a typical children's book, but it is a realistic story, for millions of children around the world. I feel these children need and deserve to have their stories told, also.

That is more than a fair question. it is not likely the same audience as my children's book. It does, however, develop the characters in the book, without putting in too many adult themes in the book itself. It clearly brings some much-desired focus onto the book, and generates insightful analysis and conversation.

I am also am a teacher. I think that because schools and universities have formalized and codified learning, many people wait until their child is in school so they can be taught by "experts". Don't wait! School will work best for children who are the best prepared, generally speaking. Children learn best when teachers can scaffold using their prior knowledge as an instrument to bring them new understandings. I agree with Tom to the nth degree. Don't lose sight of the concept that children who are intellectually engaged behave more manageably. Don't let electronic devices disengage your children from real world opportunities. One big problem I find in many students is a lack of experience and vocabulary. Developing these requires human interaction, and some concious planning. Families are the first, and best teachers. I implore everyone, particularly economically disadvataged families, to learn how to best prepare children for early success in school. Students who are poor need their family unit to really concentrate on early literacy, as literacy is a requirement for success in every academic endeavor.
