Those are amazing stories. I'm glad that your family shared them. Some people have a notion that sharing them furthers the hate but I agree with you wholeheartedly. Sharing them has to happen. Thanks for telling me. :-) If you come across any other Holocaust or World War II memoirs that you think I may be interested in, I'd love to hear from you. (I posted another review of a Holocaust survivor - Mel Mermelstein. He wrote "By Bread Alone.")

I read Beloved, but I can't remember if it's from her point of view only. I feel like it was from multiple... I could be confusing it with Possession though - which was great and from many view points, but the opening scene isn't resolved till the last pages of the book, so I was constantly on pins and needles.

And I'm not sure how I feel about that "deservedly so" comment. She seemed quite confident and stable before she got into the relationship, so it's difficult to imagine. For me. But then again, I was never in a position like that.

I certainly recommend it. I haven't come across another account (other than hers and the one reported on crimelibrary), but I did do volunteer work at the children's program in a battered women's shelter and was a caseworker for a family where the wife was battered. I'm more senstive to Hedda Nussbaum because of those experiences. The Crimelibrary account is quite harsh on her (and probably deservedly so), but when remembering the time period and the low level of attention and research that went into domestic violence, it doesn't surprise me.
