Two come to mind:

1. "Fairytale in New York" by the Pogues. Any songs that starts out with the lyric "It was Christmas Eve in the drunk tank" is all right in my book.

2. "Christmas with the Devil" by Spinal Tap. "There's someone up the chimney hole, And Satan is his name". 'Nuff said.

Really, the only rock performer that has released any "classical" music that was any good that I can think of is Jonny Greenwood. His music in There Will be Blood was quite good.

I remember seeing my first Ozzy Osbourne video we my family first got cable around 1983 or 1984. I believe the video it was "Bark at the Moon". As an 7 to 8 year old at the time, I was not ready for Ozzy.

Neil Young did both. He released some really bad albums in the early to mid 80s, but then turned it all around in the late 80s. 1988's "This Note's for You" and 1989's "Freedom" are both very good albums.

How about Spot? He produced all those early-80s SST albums; albums by Black Flag, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Hüsker Dü, Descendents, Minor Threat, etc...

I'd like to hear more pipe organ in rock music. Frankly, the only rock album I can think of that has used the pipe organ is Arcade Fire's Neon Bible. I want to hear more pipe organ!

"Galvanize" by the Chemical Brothers, featuring Q-Tip. I think it was in a Budweiser commercial. Good song.

On a side note, "Everybody's Happy Nowadays" by the Buzzcocks was in an AARP commercial. I already knew the song, but it really surprised me. I got a new respect for AARP that day.

Amen on Submarines of Stockholm by A.C. Newman and The Replacements by Art Brut! DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshakes by Art Brut is also really good.

Pearl Jam certainly aren't anywhere are commerically popular as their were 15 years ago, but I agree that they've never jumped the shark.
