Keeping with the 80's vibe. I was just listening to a few songs on my Pod, and realized that they're really fun songs, they'll get you dancing, but the lyrics are incidental

And, i have to make my annual reference to Phil Collins "Sussudio". Don't know what the song is about, but I love the Earth, Wind, and Fire horns on that song.

I agree with Mr. Seel. "I'll be With You Tonight" is a rockin song. Another CT song from Dream Police that falls into this category is "The House Is Rockin' (With Domestic Problems). "Heavy...Heavy...Heavy.. Yeah.. The house is rockin still I gotta go in"

Oh, yeah.. "Sometimes the milk can huuurt you" makes me howl everytime. And the "Jazz Discharge Party Hats" was incredible.

I may have to download those tonight. Haven't heard them in years.

Also, "Nothing But Flowers" by Talking Heads makes me laugh. "I miss the honky tonks, Dairy Queens and 7-11's....you got it, you got it.." I love that line.

I'm assuming that we're talking songs that aren't novely songs like Weird Al or The Chipmunks, or parody/comedy songs like Flight of the Conchords, Steven Lynch, etc.

Yep, "Cows" by The Suburbs makes me laugh. "Hey Move Over" get's me every time.

It was probably a KISS belt buckle that was all glittery that I found at Spencer Gifts. And probably some lame KISS shirt that had the rubbery/plastic iron on that would evenetually disintigrate after about 10 washings.

Probably got a KISS concert tee at my first ever concert.

Now I'm trying to remember all my concert T's that I had over the years.

I can only remember The Cars, Gary Numan - Telekon Tour, Thomas Dolby, KISS, probably Queen... I'm sure there are others. Blue Oyster Cult, perhaps?

My wish is that this band made more than one album: The La's. "There She Goes" was their "hit" song, but the whole album has some other really great songs. Singer/songwriter/leader, Lee Mavers had such a knack for melody and a great pop sensibility, along with a great gravely voice. Unfortunately, they released only the one album "The La's". His alleged propensity for perfectionism barely allowed the album to be released, and I've read numerous stories that he's still not satisfied with it and isn't likely to record any more songs any time soon.

Frick!, where do you shop for music? Cripes, you've a lot of it. ;-)

It's called the St. Paul and Ramsey County Libraries. Lots of stuff gleaned from CDs. Although, to be fair, a majority of the songs on the list were purchased in one way or another. I'm not a complete criminal.

I always hated Nirvana and the whole grunge thing, but I will say that I do have a newfound respect for Nirvana with the release of the MTV Unplugged album, and their versions of "All Apologies" and the incredible covers of "The Man Who Sold The World" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night". I finally "got" them in that context, but still don't care for the studio albums. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" still annoys the bejeesus out of me to this day.

I will also agree with Barb on the They Might Be Giants. I'd heard of them and thought their songs were cute, but I didn't care for "Birdhouse In Your Soul" too much, and I'd never really spent a lot of time with them until "Factory Showroom" came out. THAT's when I finally got them and have loved them ever since. For me it was the song "I Can Hear You" that made me love them. A song about the marvels of modern technology recorded at the Edison Laboratories on the lowest-fi equipment imaginable. I thought it was brilliant.

Lastly, the other artist that I'll have to say I have changed my opinion about is Neil Diamond. I loved his early rock-n-roll songs, but then he had his whole 70's-90's schmaltz era that made me ill. Now, his last two albums with Rick Rubin really show what a great songwriter he really is, and I'm glad he took the chance to go that route. I will say, that I have seen him in concert in the 1980's and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen in terms of showmanship. He knows how to work the crowds. I took my mom to see him as a Mother's Day present, and she was in tears with happiness. I was in awe of his sparkly shirt.

I with the sentiment on the show about the Ting Tings. Not the deepest lyrics, but the songs are so much fun and catchy. I even mentioned to the Mrs. that was this summer's Lily Allen. And Fruit Machine is my current fave after That's Not My Name.

I'll have to ponder the question of the week a little while longer.

Frick, Do you keep a scorecard of all the shows you see? You remember so many details!

No, I don't. There are plenty of shows that I barely remember (due to ingestion of various substances) or that were fairly uneventful. Those are some of the ones that made a negative impression that stuck with me.

I'm definitely going to try to make a list again of all the shows I've seen. I'd probably be surprised at how many I've actually been to.

I've never been to a concert that's been absolutely awful, I've just seen some shows that I was very disapointed in, mostly because of volume issues.

1. REM w/Camper Van Beethoven - Roy Wilkins Auditorium - 1987(ish)
They were too freaking loud for the venue. And we all know that Wilkins stinks as a concert venue anyway. I loved REM, and had seen them previously and loved their show. I couldn't enjoy it that time around.

2. Elvis Costello & The Attractions w/ Crash Test Dummies - Northrup Auditorium - late 80's.
Again.. TOO LOUD! I had remembered my ear plugs, but my poor friend who was with me didn't. She started to glaze over and almost become catatonic because of the white noise and volume.

3. Jonathan Richman - First Ave (05) and Turf Club (06)
The First Ave. show was marred by technical problems, and then the Danceteria crowd coming in before he was done, making all sorts of noise, which sort of started drowning him out .

For The Turf Club show, he was sick as a dog with a cold and was chugging cough syrup and/or some kind of medicine to get through it. He finally had to give up singing and just played. It was a very short set, maybe an hour or slightly less. Still, he gave it his all. His closing rendition of "Walter Johnson" was pretty amazing. You could hear a pin drop.

4. Everything But The Girl - Fitzgerald Theater - early 90's
This was their pre-electronica days when they were still more jazzy/folky. Tight band, great sound, but Tracy Thorn mostly sang w/ her back to the audience in the corner, and, they were pretty boring to watch. I started to wish it was over sooner than it was.

5. Henry Rollins - Spoken Word - Pantages - 04 or 05
The Mrs. and I refer to this show as "The Butt-Numbing Hostage Situation". Nearly 3 1/2 hours of Henry's stories, rants, poems, whatever. I love HR, and I love his spoken word, and I understand wanting to give people their money's worth, but when you get to the point where you're saying to yourself "My brain is full. I absolutly cannot comprehend any more information."and out comes another notebook, that's when I think people started wishing bodily harm on him . Maybe he didn't need to be anywhere the next day, or maybe he was lonely, but sometimes, less is more.

Actually, for me, pretty much any good funk song is a great summer song. James Brown, War, Wild Cherry, Ohio Players, Parliment, etc. You just gotta roll down the car windows and crank up the tunes

I didn't like Minute by Minute either. That's when they went all "Steely Dan" and hired in the LA session guys to play. Although, I do think Jeff "Skunk" Baxter is a pretty cool guitar player.

I was so in my own little musical world that I really didn't care what people listened to that much. I did have a few friends that were REALLY into Styx, and I guess I'd have to agree w/ Mr. DeVille. I never got them. I do, now, listen to them with complete irony.

But then, I was REALLY into Rush and Queen at the time, so who am I to say?

We just returned from a 5 day trip to SF and it changed my wife into a driving monster. She got the hang of the city traffic pretty quickly and it has kind of stuck with her after we returned to MN. She now actively seeks out busy city streets here to keep her skills honed.

One other rule we learned: The highway exit you need will ALWAYS be the furthest lane away from whichever lane you are in at the present moment. ALWAYS.
