Thank you so much Queen Duckie for your kind words. I'm still chuckling too. I'm not totally happy with my final line but really really laugh at "I knew the addition of a scrotum wasn’t going to affect my social life in any way.."

You farming facebook people amaze me. I have, over the years, found countless ways to waste my time on the computer, but this whole concept of fictional farming simply astounds me. Perhaps if one could get the local labourers to undertake other more important household tasks...

Sisters are doing it for themselves! You are so right Dianne, it's exhilarating when we ford the stream, climb the mountain and follow the rainbow while packing only internal gonads. Hopefully lasses thirty years younger than us will never need this thrill, having been less convinced of their practical uselessness throughout their up-bringing. I'm very lucky in that when the sperm-donor isn't about, I have a childless, single sister who has always had to wield her own lug-wrench and can do the powerful thing on a regular basis. She is inspiring!

Wilhelmine this is a wonderful essay, wherein our basic mistrust of our own worth is explored in an historical western sense and then abruptly brought into perspective by the reality of the war against women that exists to this day throughout most the world.

I love reading about your childhood, about your parents and your wonderful Joe whom you loved to distraction, and you make those stories so readable and engaging. But you still manage to make the point that the feminist agenda we uphold in the west is a laughable abstraction to most of the world.

If we look to apartheid in South Africa, it is clear that it was an Easter Parade compared to the so called life being endured by women in fundamentalist Islamic regimes, yet if the US had to refuel in Johannesburg back then, if the US didn't grow their own oranges, who knows if trade sanctions would ever have lasted there. Who knows if Mandela would ever have been freed...

The oppression of half the population in Gulf nations is ignored politically because there is oil, and because they are only women afterall. Go figure..

The perfect world of accepting God's babies or accepting abstinence only works if BOTH partners are committed to these Catholic ideals. Jimmy clearly had no worries with adultery so his concern for heavenly dictates over earthly desires didn't match Ruth Ann's and therein lies the sadness in this tale. Mind you, had Jimmy sought advice from Father Featherbrain he may have been told to exercise his marital rights regardless of Ruth Ann's hesitancy, so at least he was never asked to become a rapist by his priest.

Abortion is a tragedy and every serious pro-lifer should be demanding more effective sex education ('abstinence only' being a pile of horse sh*t), better access to contraception, and be pursuing ways to make adoption a tolerable option. Til then, as always, desperate women will procure abortions and the only thing a civilised society can do is ensure they can do so legally, safely and without the condemnation of people who have no frikkin clue.

I appreciated your segue from 'life with Robert' to Ruth Ann's story. Being passionately opposed to the views of your educated, kind man would be very conflicting, but it is the experiences of how these theories affect real women and children that make it impossible to concede the issue. And I think a great many people experience this conflict of hating the theory while loving the theorist.

Regardless of the issues raised, you've engaged the reader as always with insightful wit and elite story-telling.

Very interesting article Lisa. The 'superiority' factor I guess can include the 'glad it's not me' feeling behind much of our laughter (also exemplified by the banana peel situation). And the 'surprise' category would include the unexpected tricks with words that make us laugh (like the one about the two men who worked in a ball-bearing factory, one lost his bearings and the other lost his mind..). Basically I'm saying surprise and superiority would have to be very broadly interpreted if they included all the reasons we laugh, and so I too question Dr Hyphen. Laughter is a form of entertainment that we seek out as much as music, books and films. Just try and get a ticket to the Melbourne Comedy Festival some time.. It lifts our spirits in that formal way just as it does when shared with intimates at times of anxiety or sorrow. So perhaps it is simply a life-enhancing process that evolved along with our opposable thumbs.

Sharing smiles and laughter with babies is I think more of an acknowledgment and celebration of our humanity rather than feeling actually amused. Afterall, babies are God's way of telling us he hasn't given up on the human race yet.. according to someone clever once. Wonderful discussion Lisa.

I loved reading this.. felt a great deal of sisterhood and Marilyn Frenchesque authenticity in the discussion the women shared. But I must be very stupid, because the final exchanges confused me. All along I felt Julia was the one most knowledgeable about Anna Walker yet the final line seems to come from Katie. And maybe it's supposed to and that's our surprise, that Julia's new friend was an intimate of her old muse, but I was a-head-scratchin over this. Loved the yarn though, and would read chapters of this obsessively if it were part of a larger tale.

Thanks Dianne, I am just that teensy bit younger than many here (and a helluva lot older than many others!) so I was right there at the right moment for the Brady family to fill my head with all sorts of crazy notions... thanks to re-runs though, I also got to be a Patty Duke and Gidget fan too, so i feel quite informed on so many levels ;) (and you have no idea how much i wanted a frikkin pink princess phone!)

Ah Wilhelmine, now there was another grand telly father.. pa walton! and he's recently re-emerged to be Mark Harmon's father on NCIS. I had a thing for television dads of course because I lacked one of my own... and Lorne Green, oh dearie me yes! Oh and Brian Keeth on A Family Affair, and Bill Bixby in the Glen Ford role in the telly version of Courtship of Eddie's Father... William Schallert as Patty Duke's dad, and well.. Happily there came along Archie Bunker and telly fathers stopped being all that enticing ;)

NONE of which would interest me in the least if it were proposed to me in the abstract. But reading and seeing all this here makes me incredibly envious that 1) regular shoes never fit me and 2) the only craft I've ever wanted to pursue is turning clothes dryer lint into cushions, because I really thing somebody should!

Your adventures in girliedom was a fantastic read, your pan people are gorgeous, and your alibi 'It was a low-will-power day' will now be used by me many times i'm sure.. ;)

Good Grief! This ancient article popped up next to something I just did.. and it made me realise 1) I miss you horribly and 2) you are seriously lazy in a very entertaining way.

For goodness sake, why would a single person ever EVER conceive of using a dishwasher? You admit to owning regular dish-washing detergent. The reasonable person test, that is my view, suggests that the normal people amongst us would therefore use the sink and the dish-washing detergent to quickly wash the two plates, three forks and two butter knives that are in need of cleansing.. without ever once considering turning on the dishwasher. But then again, I am an uncompromising bitch..

My kindest wishes to you David. I genuinely hope that life and love are so compelling for you these days that this gathersphere is no longer necessary. X X

'deliciously helpless' what a perfect phrase Magi! I shall have to search deep within my Irish ancestry and discover if I too could possibly feign delicious helplessness, or even muster up the odd simper, if it could help me find the tearfully joyful company of a Big Otter, or even a moderately proportioned Otter which would of course do as well...
I'm right now wondering if it is merely a coincidence that the favourite food of otters happens to be clams.. I doubt it. NOTHING you write is a mere coincidence! Wonderful write as always Magi.
