We'll have to agree to disagree. I've always raised my kids this way (I love the fact that they walk to school starting day 1 at age five) and can "roam" the city by about age 10 and will be just fine. They get to be kids. I have no reason to hover, they're safe, and since I've taught them well, they make good decisions.

The myth of these children running "rampant" is silly, and the myth that they're in danger is too.

But that's why I'm the mom to my kids and others are the moms to theirs. Sadly, if more moms were like me and those like me, more kids would be out there playing, increasing even further their odds of safety, security, education, common sense, knowledge, experience, and learning. But as long as people chain up their children, those are the ones that suffer.

It is what it is.

I have to agree. I think back when my mother was a baby, doctors were misinforming parents to wake them so they eat on a schedule. Since baby has no schedules, because they just need to eat when they're hungry, that recommendation has long since ended. Babe knows when they're hungry.

Hm. Never heard of waking a sleeping baby to feed them. Four of them, I just fed them when they were hungry. Interesting, something that definitely wouldn't have worked for my family - when those babies slept, there's no way I would've woken them for anything!

And that's why my well-balanced, honor roll, athletic, well adjusted kids are lucky to have me as a mom - we know that movies are just movies, video games are just video games, neither make a child violent or angry. What a glorious world we live in that we can watch anything we want in our home!

We are a family of horror movie/gore freaks. We like them scary, we like them suspenseful, we like them gross. Every Friday night is spent together as a family with the lights off, popcorn made, and the latest thriller in the DVD player - regardless of the age of child. It's wonderful because the younger ones think it's fun, and they like to try to make daddy or I jump; one of my older ones wants to be a movie writer or special effects artist when he's older. To date, not one of my children has ever been afraid of the dark, scared of the "boogie man", or anything of the sort.

The only movies that our children are not permitted to watch is porn or soft porn. Anything else is fine. We have the house that ALL the kids like to come watch movies at! :)

They are safe. But they don't have to fear strangers or not play in the front yard alone, because strangers are the good guys.

What a sad world parents must live in to teach their child that strangers are bad. In my home, we don't teach stranger danger. Since abductions by strangers are sooooo pathetically ridiculously rare (Uncle Bob is the one most likely to cause harm; the risk of abduction of my children by a stranger is about 50 in 300 million), we look at strangers as the good guys. And online? Nah. Just not worried about it. The fearmongering 24 hour media and parents who blur the line between reality and CSI have caused a wave of paranoia across our country; it's a fact crimes against children are down, my children are as safe to play outside as I was in the 70's, and I will not make my children live in fear of our very VERY safe society.

I feel bad for the parent that lives in mortal fear every day that someone will harm their child. They're more likely to harm them in their own vehicle - or falling out of bed! - than a perfect stranger take them from their yard or shopping mall. It just doesn't happen enough for me to stifle my children's childhood. They're free to roam, they've gained so much maturity, awareness, and responsibility because we don't hover over them. And they'll be fine.

I think it's fabulous. If she is having a natural birth, in a calm loving environment (the home, birthing center), I think this is a great learning tool; no different than the videos in those awful childbirth classes, and probably better than you'd find on YouTube. I am sending my prayers to her that she has a beautiful childbirth experience.

I desperately wanted to be on one of those shows or have a video made for childbirth classes with any of my four; I wanted to show that natural, intervention free childbirth doesn't have to be painful, no one screams, there's no drama... but my labors are too fast and the producers WANT drama - which is why you only see the long, painful, screaming labors on those shows. And my labors went too fast to have a producer there with cameras for any childbirth classes. Sniffle.

Anyways, I wish I would've had an opportunity to do this. I think it's awesome.

Glad you are feeling better. We are a family that will never get a flu shot, and absolutely will never get the H1N1. Fortunately, you survived your (reasonably mild) flu, but people are dying from the shot. And had you gotten the shot, it wouldn't have prevented your flu anyways. You are very fortunate that you didn't get formaldehyde, mercury, detergents, antifreeze, and other poisons injected into your body for no reason. Sending virtual chicken soup for a speedy recovery!

My heart hurts for every parent who has lost a child. But how DARE you call me "cavalier". How DARE you question my parenting! 50 out of 300 million murdered by strangers! That's a statistic that's BARELY a statistic! I will NOT make my child fear the world because of such an infinitessimal risk!!!!

LIFE is a risk! Why gamble getting behind the wheel of a car? Are you so numb by watching auto wrecks on your nightly news that you feel nothing about them? That could be you and your child - and yes, that's 100% preventable! What about the family that lost a child sitting in her bedroom? How CAVALIER were they? Should they be judged by the media for LIVING???????

This is absolutely ridiculous. I can't believe the mentality of you people. I can't believe you live in fear, instead of LIVING.

In our SAFE world.

I'm outta here. I can't fight with people that are so biased and unarmed with information. LOL... so if my daughter's Uncle Bob is waiting outside for her to walk to school, then she's in danger. You just said it's the known people that I need to worry about; only about 50 per year are strangers. Fact. Again, 50 too many, but nothing whatsoever I will ever blink an eye at. What PURE ABUSE that would be to my kids to make them fear our safe world.

I hope none of you sleep in a bed - you can fall out tonight and die. You have a higher chance of that than your child being harmed. Oh - and definitely don't drive anywhere. 1 in 8 people will get in an accident. Oh wait - walking across the kitchen floor kills 600 people a year. Better stop that too. All of these things are absolutely 100% preventable.

I hope you don't live near where airplanes fly. One could crash into your house. Better set up camp on the front porch and keep looking up! Oh, there's a huge chance you'll fall in the tub tonite and die. Better start taking sponge baths. All of these things hold more risk than my child being hurt.

Hope you never go outside in a thunderstorm. Your odds of being hit by lighting are more than your child being abducted and killed by a stranger. Wait - really everyone should just buy a lottery ticket today. You're sure winners!

The sex offender databases are crap. People are put on them for having sex at 19 with their 17 year old girlfriends. Besides that, even a "real" one isn't sitting on their front porch with a bowl of candy waiting for my kids to walk by.

I realize every day just how lucky my kids are to have me. I can't imagine being such an overly paranoid, glassy-eyed CSI believer, ill-informed, unarmed with real information, fearmongering mother that hovered over them every second in my dilusional world thinking they're in danger everywhere they go. My neck would hurt from looking behind me. My children would be so sheltered and unable to actually BE children. What a sad life that would be for them. I'm so glad I have a strong grip on reality here, and my kids are all the better for it.

More power to you guys... I'm getting ready to send my kid out the door... ALONE! GASP! And they'll be home tonite! Gasp!

What is "perfecting" it? Getting rid of all the poisons? Making it so girls are made infertile?

They'll never do it. They've been lying to parents for decades with other poisons that "prevent" (that's laughable" disease but do nothing but put poisons in a body. This one is no different.

Oh, and as an addition - if everyone wants to blame the parents for letting a perfectly responsible and definitely old enough child walk to school; are we going to blame the parents of the 12 year old child abducted from her bedroom a few years ago? 10 years ago? I don't remember when - since actual stranger abductions are SO FEW AND FAR BETWEEN, I don't give them much thought.

So should the parents of the child taken from their bedroom be blamed by the media and uninformed parents? What should THEY have done? Should they have had a panic room installed so that their child would be "safe"????

THE FEARMONGERING MUST STOP, for all of our sakes!

The scaremongering must stop. We live in a VERY safe society - VERY SAFE. Our children should not be scared of strangers, should not cower in fear in their own homes. About 50 kids (out of 300 million plus people!) are actually abducted and killed by strangers per year in the United States. Although this is 50 too many, it's hardly worth losing ONE MOMENT of sleep over (because you have a higher risk of falling out of bed and dying than of your child being abducted by a stranger).

My children walk to school starting in kindergarten - age 5. What a glorious thing - exercise, fresh air! By 8 or 9 they are free to roam our entire neighborhood - several thousand houses! What a glorious thing - childhood, responsibility, maturity, learning! By 11 or 12? The CITY! Wherever their little feet or bike wheels can take them!

And they are safe!!!!!

What a disservice to a child to prevent them from BEING a child. I thank God every day our society is so safe that my children can play outside in our back yard without me tethering myself to them; that they can walk to school, or to see a friend. What a glorious thing - a safe world.

Don't blur the lines between CSI and real life. Turn off 24 hour news shows. The world is safer than it was when we grew up in the 70's. Crimes against children are DOWN. But you wouldn't know it because BLOOD SELLS.

Let your children go. What a beautiful world it would be if all the children said "hello" to the stranger rather than fearing him.

Everyone needs to lick the beaters.

The weekend before Christmas we see my parents, Christmas Eve is just the six of us (me, hubby, four kids). Then we get up in the morning on Christmas Day, open our gifts and eat a small breakfast, then drive three hours to hubby's family; 24 grandkids, 3 great grandkids, and dozens of adults - we love every single minute of the chaos. Then we come back home that night (yup, I drive the three hours back because I won't spend the night anywhere but my house) and relax the next day.

It's hectic, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. I love the noise, the people, the chaos of Christmas Day. We do the exact same thing on Thanksgiving and Easter too.

My baby is meant to be a baby. At 6 or 7 months, she should be concentrating on crawling, walking, stacking blocks, and eating dirt. It's not going to guarantee her admittance to Harvard if I force her to memorize letters (that's all it is) long before she's ready to. Won't make her smarter than her peers. It. Just. Won't.

If I published a study that said babies that wear purple have higher IQs than babies that don't, I'd be a millionaire in 2 weeks after I began manufacturing purple clothing. The marketing hype aimed at gullible parents is ridiculous and must be stopped.

A baby needs to be a baby. There's plenty of time for learning later, when she's ready.
