I agree with the points of the post, however I must comment on Amazon rankings. I track the rankings of my two books using Books and Writers.com. When I sell a book, the ranking gets much better this tracking alone gives me a good idea of how many books I sell, and is very exact. I sell signed copies of my books on Amazon and when I do I get an email from Amazon saying who bought the book and where to ship it. After I get the email, the rank jumps (it could go from 800K up to 75K)
Another thing about selling the signed copies is that I communicate with my readers, and they comunicate with me. I have a database of all the readers who have bought signed copies from me and I answer their emails. This is the best thing about it. My readers know me and I know a little about them as well. I can email my readers at any time to let them know about new devlopments in my writing career (a 2nd edition of my first book "Soul Bared: A Metaphysical Journey" is in process) or to just touch base with them.
I just wanted to say that yes, the Amazon rankings can be used to track Amazon sales, I've tracked mine for years.
