I am a fortunate man. Genetics gives me much to look forward to with my wife, her mother is beautiful in every way. Thanks for a reminder of the struggles of dating and the feared mother in law, life has granted me a pass on both accounts. Just wonderful, Terry.

This gives me visions of a summer on the farm out near Ft. Morgan Colorado. The sense of being at home in a foriegn place comes to mind with "In the mountains an elk bugles his welcome". I think of a special winter at Jackson Hole Wyoming with my sister.

thanks maria, it was forty years ago but it came to mind today when my dog snapped at me. She was very tired and confused and I was scolding her for getting on my pillows. I reached out to grab her and "snap." It was nothing a gentle ear rubbing and a little sleep did not cure. You are right maria, dog's bite for a reason and when a sweet loving dog bites you the reason is usually very clear and justifiable.

King's devotion lacked boudries that should have been taught to him. Putting him down demonstrated the mindset of the sixties as well as a lack of compassion for the animal kingdom that is much more enlightened now in 2009.

I understand. My intention was not to correct anything but to informally share the process and progress of my own thoughts in response to your own. Forgive me if my indulgence came out as corrective, it was not intended to be an academic statement, just a record of my thinking so that you could watch. Casual "thinking out loud," of sorts.
It is a wonderful piece and I enjoyed engaging it because it deserved much more than a pat on the back - which is also a good thing. Thank you for the kind response, John.

My mind is bent back in on itself when I question the meaning of emptiness, juxtaposed to the act of “Emptiness."
Physically speaking, "nothingness" can not exist in time an space, it would have to take place somewhere and at a certain time. That would give “nothingness” status as a thing, which contradicts its own definition as being “not-a-thing.” It is an entertaining mind exercise that can be both enjoyable, and for the unsettled compulsive mind, deafening.

As for me, I appreciate the benefits of mediation and the state of thoughtlessness I engage through it. I mostly benefit from the idea of emptying of ones self and submission to the "act of being," a state of mind that is absent of ambition or reward. Yet, “nothingness” or “thoughtlessness” (my definition of your “nothingness”), does have a solitary purpose that is "to be," which can have a calming and centering affect on the mind. A quieting via thoughtlessness is the path, as your wonderful verse would so "preach."

From you verse as well as unfortunate personal experience, I also learn that the locus of the most distracting of all sounds are the unfettered thoughts of an undisciplined mind.

Congrats on a well thought out verse and a worthwhile read.

Boris,

This captures an aspect of the Hollywood culture that is familiar to anyone who went there infected with the “dream,” only to have it murdered in its “Slaughter House.” It is a fascinating and visceral work, and tragically relevant. The “dream” has an insidiousness to it that brings to mind a different take on Rod Sterling’s “Caterpillar” of the Night Gallery series; boring into the brain on its neural tour via an insatiable apatite for brain matter and genetic compulsion to nest and lay its eggs. Unlike the “Caterpillar” entity, here the dream is a genetic bait that takes the form of obsessive “wanting” that draws one to a machine, an internal impetus to find oneself, become something, or more often - something different. The “dream” here is human vision of wanting, a meme entity manifested as a sort of living mind meat to be slaughtered and consumed.

This is a fascinating read, Boris. I see a book in the making with this one.

The first time I read this was across the table from you at happy hour last night - the buffalo wings and beer nearly grounded me today.
It is a metaphor of unfulfilled dreams, frustration of effort, and lament of the human condition. A layer below the text and metaphor that challenges the American Dream and the Dreamer to live today, live now and embrace what is in the present, but still dream.

I wrote these poems for young adults who were abused as children. I want to provide some sense of compassion and perhaps some vision for healing that might interrupt the pattern of abuse and bring about a healing change in the family system.

To often those who speak in the name are missunderstood by the religeous thinkers in their choice of words. "Proof" does not mean "truth." Proof is merely the preponderance of evidence, it is not of the same quality of term as "truth."
Look at it this way; "proof" is a scientific term, "truth" is a religious one.
The most absurd of all statements is to say that something has been "proved true." There is only one being from whose mouth this does not sound offensive to me, that being is God. Let only God and morons be allowed to say that anything has been "proven true" All others should bite their tongue.

This would be so much easier if all would simply follow the rules of logic, as opposed to faith. They are not of the same kind of reasoning, to insist they are one is to murder them both. This is the error of religious right, (their double bind that says that reason = faith), that makes them seem like madmen to all others.

Now that we have talked about your father and how he passed, I can see how your loss of him was so terrible. He was clearly a great man and I am deeply grateful that his existence led to yours. Beautifully done, John. Thank you so much.

Parents are responsible for what they hear or do not hear.
While my personal view is that all children should have been allowed to hear the speech, I support any parent who concerns themselves with it. More so, I support any parent who do something about it, even if I don't like what they decide to do.
Perhaps this has gotten some parents more involved in their child's education, I hope that they will stay involved for this reason and do what they believe is right.

I get from this that there is a moment of self reflection going. There is a questioning of whether the artist can be contained, or perhaps fully known or defined by self in the verse, "Frame silvery phantom

trying on present tense ….

see if she fits inside, pretending

it to be enough.

It takes a while for me to get into the gist of this one, but a second reading had wonderful payoffs. Thank you so much, Laura.
