Thank you Steve, the U.P. is a truly magical place - but of course I live here so I am biased because of the beautiful woods and peaceful lakes and streams.

Thank you Janet - Michigan is a great place to live = if everyone could experience the wonder of the Michigan woods - there would be a lot less pollution.

Steve - in many ways I agree with you - its amazing how many wars have been waged in the name of religion - but relgiions are run by humans - not better or worse than common man - which may explain why horrendous things happen like child molestors.
But not all are bad - in fact the majority of the people who belong to the honorable faith traditions are decent people.
and while they strongly disagree on many issues - we have brought them together under a common goal - helping the environment in a real and measureable way - like our first three Earth day projects recycling 360 tons of stuff from homes in the U.P. - Greg

Dear Dan E.,

I disagree - but as a reporter I welcome your different point of view.

I guess you have to be low-income - and/or Indigenous - to truly appreciate Jensen's writings.

Today's middle class is so shocked by the recession - but we who live paycheck to paycheck have lived it for decades.

on related subject - Just glad I did not fall for the great American credit card scam (have never and will never own one) despite getting hundreds of letters asking me to get one.

Also - knew I could not afford a home loan despite bankers peddling them like crack.

Maybe the only good thing about the current economic crisis will be that the middle class will realize they too were conned by some of the rich and are not far from losing it all.

When you have virtually nothing - you can't lose anything.

Not all the rich are evil just like not all corporations are evil - but far too many climbed to the top on the backs of the poor (or had it handed to them) - and are so out of touch with reality they may as well live in a different solar system.

I respect your point of view - just think it comes from not having had to walk in the shoes of those who understand and appreciate Jensen's words.

Dear Mc Lovin - thanks you for your comment - and for watching the video.
You are correct there are many fair trade products - including chocolate and much much more.
I guess I don't mind paying a few penies more if I am assured that the money was going to the lowest rung in the process - the farmers - and their families - and not further enriching an already rich middle man.

So vivid, I can taste and smell your pictures - what a great trip you had.

Nice touch with Bill and Roses.

I can't eat "red" sauce but I bet they had lots of pasta in a variety of white sauces.

The Spanish steps are so elegant and the apartment more modern that my mind's eye pictured - not sure why - maybe too many old movies.

Next time pack me in your luggage - I don't mind for a trip like that.

Thanks for comment Kay - and yes it's crystal clear - it's amazing how far down you can see in the water and spot fish off the breakwaters - or breakwalls as we locals call them.

Only drawback its often kinda cool or down right cold.

Except in July, August and sometimes Sept. when it warms up.

Sadly, an acid sulfide mine (that mines nickle but sulfuric acid is major & huge byproduct) is opening up soon near the shores of Lake Superior - and there is fear it will collapse into a tributary - then all the Great Lakes would be drastically effected.

Dear Joe,

I was lucky to grow up on Lake michigan in the tiny town of Harbert (luived in poet Carl Sandburg's famous home where he wreote fog, chicago and other poems - but that's another story).

I spent many many hours in Lake Michigan - the only drawback was the ailwife that would die - stink - have to be raked/burned or burried.

But the water was clean - and we would swim out to the second and event third sandbards - oh the days of youth (early 70s). Many summer days we practically never left the water - and then had fires on the beach at night - lots of kids vacationed in cottages built by Sandberg in my neighborhood.
They came from around the lake and world.

But I also remember those stinky rides thru Gary, IN etc.

I too used to throw meds in trash - or flush - before I knew it was a bad thing to do.

Glad to hear that.

In fact, as a child I rmember seeing news stories about how polluted Lake Erie is - but in recent years I have watched stories/TV shows about how clean Lake Erie has become.

One was highlighting the great fishing - and had underwater video that was very clear.

I think much of America still associates Lake Erie with pollution when - apparently - the lake has made a big comeback thatnks to people who care.

I am expecting photos/videos in from the Pennsylvania and Ohio collections in this same project (EPA Great Lakes 2008 Earth Day Challenge)- in which we will be talking about Lake Erie.

Wow - that is spectacular memorial to vets.
My dad recently organized fund drive to create (much smaller) tribute to a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient in tiny town of Foster City, MI.
So I understand your mission.

Meditation is no un-Christian - Centering prayer and similar methods can be a very effective way to be closer to God.
If you like it - each to his or her own.
Sometimes Christians can be very selfrighteous - the Michigan Turtle Island Project - run by two Christian pastors - promotes respect for all religions and interfaith prayer.
After all, there is only one "divine" being aka God - so we are all praying to the same entity.

Michigan's economy is in very bad shape - but I fear polluting our natural resouces will be the end of tourism especially as many lakes become unuseable.
One mistake at this mine will send the acid into a Lake Superior tributary and Kennecott's history on pollution is hrrendous.
These mining companies have already said they plan dozens of acid mines once this one opens - then uranium mines.
I am not a radical - I enjoy fishing and hunting but I also know the smell of a skunk and the sneakiness of rats.
Plus I am not anti-business - as our iron ore mines - while they cause some pollution - stick around over one hundred years with thousands of high paying jobns.
These acid mines are open only 7 years - with at most 150 jobs - then leave local residents stuck with the mess.
One writer made a great suggestion - have the mining company sign an iron-clad pact they would be responsible for turning the property back into it's original condition - no pollution.
But Kennecott is afraid to sign such an agreement.
If company executives are so sure of no pollution - why not vow that if the mine opens they agree to drink the water downstream - even treated like normal water - serving it at board meetings.
I am disappointed our democratic governor - Jennifer Granholm - refuses to fight this mine.
I voted for her thinking she would bring a woman's common sense to the job instead of being just like your average white guy politico.
But Kennecott has deep pockets and have bought lots of support in many corners.
Speaking of the south - I got my start in journalism in Augusta, GA.
My friends there tell me the reservoirs and lakes are drying up - our environment keeps giving us warning signs but many just don't want to listen.

We need all the help we can get - because it appears the state is rubber stamping Kennecott's permits.
I too hope and pray we haven't ruined the U.P. for your grandson when he's old enough to take camping - and the world for all of our children.

Very touching story about your mom who struggled with her inner self.
I was saddened that electroshock therapy seemed to be the fix all - when I suspect it did more damage than good.
Today there are medications - but even that doesn't always work.
Glad the meds brought back some of the good times with your mom - for a while anyway.
It's great that you love her so much and realize it wasn't her fault.
