Hello everyone,

Great to see all the enthusiam! To answer some of your questions:

1) All entries received before 12/1 will be posted within the early days of December (assuming they meet all submission requirements). You will receive a confirmation email once your entry is live.

2) All entries received after 12/1 will be posted within 2-business days (again, assuming they meet all submission requirements).

3) The competition accepts all types of work, including poetry, as long as each individual piece is at least 2,000 words and less than 10,000. The contest is not topical (ie. we do not assign a general topic to everyone).

4) However, all pieces cannot be published anywhere else on the Internet, including Gather.com. If your entry is currently published elsewhere (blog, other website, Gather.com, etc.), it MUST be removed before we can accept the entry.

5) The competition is free and open to anyone over the age of 18 -- international participants are welcomed and encouraged (we've even had a couple international winners!).

6) We accept unfinished work, including chapters, as long as the entire piece of work is previously unpublished.

Due to the large amount of submissions received, if you submitted before Dec. 1, then your entry will be posted within the early days of the competition. Any entry received Dec. 1 and after will adhere to the "two business day" rule.

Thanks for all the questions! We're very excited to see so much interest in the December submission period. Below, I've outlined some answers to your questions:

1) All submissions must be between 2,000 and 10,000 words or they cannot be accepted by Amazon.com.

2) The competition accepts all types of work, including poetry, as long as each individual piece is at least 2,000 words and less than 10,000. The contest is not topical (ie. we do not assign a general topic to everyone).

3) However, all pieces cannot be published anywhere else on the Internet, including Gather.com. If your entry is currently published elsewhere (blog, other website, Gather.com, etc.), it MUST be removed before we can accept the entry.

4) The competition is free and open to anyone over the age of 18 -- international participants are welcomed and encouraged (we've even had a couple international winners!).

We have thought about this issue, as a couple people have mentioned it. However, not all pieces submitted to the contest are fiction. Since the rules do not require an entrant to mark "ficion" or "nonfiction" and since the Administrators do not read each piece thoroughly prior to posting, it is sometimes difficult to determine the piece's intended genre. Therefore, in an effort to give equal "tagging" to each piece, we have decided to use a handful of the same tags on each Amazon Shorts entry.

The royalty split of $0.49 is part of Amazon's contract with the winning writers and therefore is confidential — standard in the industry. We can say however that it is a fair royalty split. As many of you have said in your comments, the big prize here is the marketability and visibility for winning authors on Amazon Shorts.

Previously published writers are eligible for the contest as long as the entry they submit to the contest has not been published elsewhere (except on Gather). If an author currently has a title for sale on Amazon.com though they can also submit a short to Amazon Shorts.

There has been some discussion about what system we will be using to determine the members' choice winners in the contest each month. Earlier in this comment thread we told you that we will be using a system of average rating * number of votes to determine a total score. I'm afraid we have oversimplified our answer, and while average rating and total votes are the primary factors used in our calculation, we are also using a standard weighting system to normalize the scores. To ensure fair results we are not publishing that calculation. Please email us if you have any further questions regarding the voting and good luck!

For determining the members' choice winners, we use our rating system, which averages all of the individual ratings an article has received. At the end of the voting period, we will take that rating and multiply it by the number of votes the article has received for a total points score, thus undermining the chance that someone who has only 2 votes of 10 will win over someone who has 7 votes of 9. We have used this same system for all other members' choice picks in our previous writing competitions and we feel it is the fairest way to select the winners.
