That makes a lot of sense. I did some reading online today and I think I'm starting to see how to recognize the passive voice better.

I am trying to fictionalize it, perhaps that is why I am having so much trouble with the voice, even with dialogue. I really wanted to try and stay away from using first person though because I didn't want it to sound like a memoir - I thought maybe it would be more appealing to publishers and readers if it was fictional...does that make sense?

As Benita says, it's going to take a lot of work...but, I think I'm up for it. Thank you for the help and taking the time to respond (both of you).

I'm a Narcoleptic - I am always doing things that I don't remember doing - it's called Automatic Behavior. My brain "checks out" for a period of time (5-20 minutes about) and misfires into REM sleep...but I am still awake and my body continues to do what I was doing. I even dream! I've always described it a lot like Sleep Walking and most people who have seen me in this state says that I look like a zombie and will say strange things that don't make sense - which is because I am dreaming, so I'm have in-half out of reality. I've gotten reports I've written returned to me at work because it either had scribble all over it or I had written something incoherent on it. Incidently, I was fired from that job. I have messed up orders as a waitress so bad that I was looked at like a complete idiot from co-workers. Incidently, I was fired from that job as well.....no disrespect, but "cool" is not a word I would use to describe it - it's embarassing.

I agree....I don't even care about the points. If I get them, great, but I'm here just mostly to meet people and have some conversations and friendly debates and to get my writing out there. Until I am able to buy a car with my points or something like that, I'm not going to care how many I get.

Oh, I'm a whore...big time, LOL. I get such a rush when I see that I get comments on something I wrote. I love that someone took the time to read my nonsense. ha ha.

But, I think I love it here so much because I like to write...and this just seems like the perfect place to write as much as you want about anything you want. I love it. You can't do that on Facebook...and Twitter? I can't keep my thoughts to one line, sorry. Anyone who knows me knows that I can't comment without writing a book either, LOL.

I just love to talk! :)...and another I noticed from this site in comparison to the other social networks...there are much more genuinely decent people here who are here for the same thing and not just here to troll or be a nuisance...maybe I just haven't met them yet, but I've seen very few crazies on this site. hahahaha - knock wood

I believe everyone experiences racism at some point in their life, all races. I am a white female and I have had experiences of racism, sexism, and discrimination for my disability. I grew up in a somewhat balanced community so I rarely had such incidences in school growing up. I dealt with the teasing and taunts for whatever reason from that group of kids that 'just don't like you' - probably as much as anyone else does. But, when I got older I had become friends with a few people that lived in a primarily Puerto Rican and Mexican neighborhood...it took quite awhile for me to feel comfortable there because I was NOT liked at first by most of the people I met at my friend's parties - usually it was the girls who didn't like me just because I was a white girl and I was dating a Mexican. When I lived in Virginia I quickly learned that I was the minority there and was treated horribly on a daily basis - store clerks, restaurants - anywhere I went I seemed to leered at and spoken to like I was not wanted. One grocery store clerk (a black woman) even turned her back to me when I came through her line! I'll admit, after 4 years living there, it became increasingly more difficult for me to not start stereotyping myself and that bothered me a great deal because I had always been proud of the fact that I wasn't prejudiced in any way - and now I was starting to be.

It didn't help that I was on the other end of it just as often as well. It is a horrible feeling when you are accused of being racist when you aren't. For example, a young black lady came to our door selling magazines or something. My husband and I listened to her offer but then very politely told her that we couldn't buy anything right now. In fact, I even made a joke that we were living on PBJ and macaroni at the moment (which was actually true), and then I said "but thank you anyway". To be honest, it's the most polite I have ever been to any door salesperson, but I happened to be in a good mood that day. She then said to my husband, "You're not buying anything just because I'm black aren't you?" - and she was not nice about it. That wasn't the only incident either. I've had several similar incidences like that and I get a little perturbed when I see specials on Oprah talking about this very thing and all the so-called "experts" try to find some way of twisting it to make you think your being racist without realizing it.

I realize that as a white woman I may not ever experience the type of racisim that other cultures do - but I do know what it feels like to be the victim of assumptions - whether it be because I am a woman (don't even get me started on the amount of sexism I've dealt with all my life), because I'm white, because I'm poor, because I'm fat, or because I have a disability. The one thing I have learned through all of it...I don't dwell on it. Those people don't matter to me and their comments do not define me.

It is wonderful to hear that you did not take on the same beliefs as your parents. I am going to go out on a limb and say that perhaps you didn't because you were so horribly abused and most likely vowed to NEVER be like them. I applaud you for that. It's so sad when I see more racists being raised in this world and most of these children grow up to be racist adults - and why wouldn't they if their home is otherwise a loving home? Why would these poor children know any different? It's so sad...I'm really glad that you have gotten away from your parents and I'm really very sorry that you had to go through that (child abuse is something that really gets to me emotionally...I just can't comprehend how a parent can behave that way)

Once it's proven that they photocopied your signature to falsify a document, that company will be in a world of hurt. Then you can sue them for all kinds of stuff like wrongful termination, creating a hostile work environment, emotional stress, racism...I'm not usually an advocate for sueing...but, in this case, you deserve some serious compensation for having to go through that nonsense!
