Ooo, this sounds SO fabulous. I especially love recipes that use simple things, things I have on hand. You start talking about strange and exotic spices I have to search for around the four corners of the globe, I'm not making (or buying) your recipe. Thanks for the tip!

Those posts annoy me as well, but I don't mind so much. Most of them give me DB 10's anyhow. :P But it is much more "fulfilling" to get a personal comment, especially if it's a well-thought out article or a much-loved picture.

Your hubby sounds like a keeper, although, I have to say I'm not THAT sound of a sleeper to miss my DH dragging in the king-sized bed. At my house, it woulda been BUMP! THUMP! WHUMP! "Gadang it!" CRASH! SMASH! "Oops..."

I'm afraid of deep water as well, Karen. As a child, I took shallow baths and I still refuse to go into the deep end of a pool unless I'm clinging precariously to the side. DH says, "Oh, you'll LOVE swimming once you learn how." Nope, don't think so. I've hated water and been terrified of it for so long, I don't think I could ever "love" it. I might tolerate it. That's about it. I still don't know how to swim beyond a dog paddle. I just have no desire to learn.

As for "writing what you know", I don't usually write things that I know personally, as I write historicals and fantasies and paranormals, but I do write "how would I react?" to certain situations. If I put myself in these situations, it's easier for me to write them. If I want a male perspective, I'll ask myself what would my hubby do? Or something similar.

So there is a nugget of truth in the saying, but you don't always have to adhere to it.

Excellent pics and history. Fascinating read. Now I wanna go! I'm trying to think if I ever saw this sign while driving on this road, but I can't remember, even though I've driven it. You'd think with a name like "ZZYZX" I'd remember. :P

I admit, my heroines all have pieces of me in them, as well as my heroes have pieces of my DH in them. I don't draw on actual events from our lives, but rather, think to myself, how would *I* react to that situation? How would my DH? Then I go from there.

Also, I place my characters in similar situations I've faced. Not having much self-confidence. Not the beautiful one. Kinder, gentler.

Seems the "trend" nowadays is for kickass heroines, and I'm sorry, but I just can't write them. Why? Well, for one, I'm not drawn to a Rambo-ette type heroine, but also, I have nothing inside me to draw on, to make that character believable. The only time I'm a biatch is when I'm driving. LOL I can't even be rude to the guy who calls ME during dinner trying to sell me something. (I'm getting better, tho. :P)

So yeah, a LOT of myself goes into my characters, from the animals they may care for, to the clothing in their closet, to the cars they drive. But I never draw on anyone else, friends, family, strangers, etc. I might look for a celebrity head-shot to give me inspiration, but I won't pull that person's characteristics, even from a roll they've played on movies or TV.

The authors mentioned are pioneers in the genre of paranormal romance. It took off in a BIG way, and we lesser authors (lol) are trying to soak up their table scraps. :P Seems like everyone is getting on the band wagon. I've heard it said readers are getting "tired" of vampy heroes/heroines and turning to shifters.

That's only good news for me. Heheheh...

But paranormal romances are fun to write, because you can do a "tired old contemporary" and spice it up with a were, a shifter, a vamp, or a ghost. It's cool to read about secret societies and agencies and/or other worlds.

The "romance" genre is definitely reaching far beyond the "same ol" contemporary and historical genres.

Goodness, if the Internet had never been invented, I never would have met my future husband in 1992 on "Prodigy", I never would have had my four beautiful children, and I'd probably have some other family, some other life. I'm not sure I would have pursued my publishing dreams. I wouldn't be as close as I am to my family and friends, because I hate to talk on the phone.

I think my life would be VASTLY different if the Internet had never come to be.

Most people don't know that Ingrams has a POD program. I have two small press publishers, Champagne Books and Samhain Publishing. These guys have books on the shelves in bookstores. And they use Lightning Source, a printer who does POD for Ingrams. These books make it to the Ingrams magazine that goes out to booksellers all over the country.

POD - or Print on Demand for those who don't know - isn't the four letter word of yesterday. It's the ONLY way small press publishers can publish their books and not break the bank. They can do small print runs. I think Samhain does 2500 book print runs.

But these publishers are being recognized by New York. The owners of Samhain just signed a deal last year with Kensington Books to become their next imprint, like Brava or Aphrodisia. They're not going to stop doing their own business, but they will be sending their choice books to Kensington, who will then print them mass market. It's an exciting time, to be sure.

True, you have to be "careful" who you publish through, I've heard horror stories about Publish America, for example. But legit publishers should be given a chance. The great thing about small press publishers is they are willing to take more of a risk on stories New York wouldn't touch. And in that vein, you can find some rare gems that never would have gotten published otherwise - not because the story sucks or the author is a newbie, but because the story was so different, that it breaks the "New York mold" if you will.

As you can tell, I'm a firm advocate of POV. :P There's nothing wrong with them. The books from my publishers are trade paperback in size, but the quality is amazing. I'm sure as they get more well-known and have more money in the bank, they will be doing mass market within 5 years.
