I've started with my kids knowing that they need to respect personal space - no hitting, etc. I remind my daughter to keep her skirt down (constantly) and to leave her brothers alone - don't play with yourself, don't play with others! I think it helps that we're open with the kids about the names of private parts and that they shouldn't be ashamed or have any feelings that those parts are different than the rest of their bodies.

When I'm alone, i.e. not in a relationship, I don't have to worry about being told the truth and about what's really going on. I also don't have to worry that things will be worse than I left them when I return home.

New York, I thought you were the worst hit from the recession? Or is that why you're at Walmart that you usually thumb your nose at?
Ripped the doors off the hinges? What was inside, free gold bars?
Here in the poor South, it was pretty sedate Friday morning - normal weekend traffic, no incidents, no massive camper lines. Maybe down here we figured it out, more or less.
I had really hoped that the recession would mean we would see far less of this junk due to people making mad consumeristic rushes less... I suppose we really haven't learned anything as a society about consumerism, we've just cut it back a tad out of necessity.

The greatest tragedy here is that in the reports I've read, the watchers waited quite some time before calling for help - this illustrates a callousness and baseness in our youth. As someone who's wife has just survived a massive overdose attempt, I know how important it is to get help quickly - she was in a coma for 24 hours but has pulled out physically fine.
All the watchers showed the exact behavior this teen seemed to have been looking for: look, talk, laugh, and let him become "an hero." These kids have so little respect for life, other's or their own, to ridicule other kids just to create the scene. Although my wife and I are undergoing a divorce, that wasn't what I thought about when I found her - I just acted to help her. I know there have been many people throughout history who have this lack of human compassion, but now we have whole communities of these kids online.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a rapid shut-down-4chan (and other sites of its ilk) campaigner. I do, however, believe we've largely abdicated our parenting responsibilities such that these events happen regularly enough that they only make the news when its something new, like this one being broadcast live.
Jesus help us all.

I commend you for being able to instill morality in your children. I agree that morality and religion are not the same, and that religion has historically had many aspects that were less about real morals and more about control, power, and money. If you look for the real Jesus outside what we think of as "religion" - that set of rules, obligations, and ceremony that's established in many of our current churches - you'll find he's as anti-religion and pro-relationship as you are.
