I loved the first one for its energy, the second for its thoughtful verse. I imagine the old man can recollect many similar instances from the past, and tell terrible tales of suffering of some and callousness of others.

I, too, am tired of the "racist" slur being thrown around, particularly at those who disagree with him. Sure, racism, bigotry and prejudice exist, but I personally think we have come a long way as a nation and culture, and for the most part, most people I meet look past color now and take others based on their own merit and actions. To continually rub this in others faces, even though untrue, negates all the awesome progress that has been made in this country to the point where the majority (thank God) of U.S. citizens are now so un-racist and un-prejudiced as to appoint a black man as the leader of this great country and our spokesman to the world. The idiotic insult hurling using the racist ploy as a pawn has got to stop; it is an insult to every American.

I look at our President, just as I do anyone, as a person, not a color. That being said, I don't agree with his politics. As a native Illinoisian, when speculation arose a couple of years ago regarding his possible presidential campaign/ election, I started following him with interest, to understand where he stood on issues, listened to his speeches, watched his voting record, etc. I disliked him then for his political stance, as now (and for the record, I did not , nor have ever liked McCain either, for me it was the lesser of 2 evils). But since he was elected, I have been trying to be optimistic that his prior voting record, and speeches, etc. were made out of immaturity, or ignorance, limited scope......anything to give him the benefit of a doubt that he will be good for this country. I have been hoping that the larger and heavier responsibility of governing this whole nation, and not just being a senator of 1 state would cause him to ponder and weigh more thoroughly his decisions that would impact the entire world. I was also hoping (for his sake) that he would truly prove the naysayers and bigots wrong and end up being one of our best presidents, but every decision he makes only confirms my initial impressions.
I keep seeing quoted that the American public voted and got what they wanted, it may be true that they majority voted for him, but study after study before and after he was elected, asking the common person on the street who they were voting for and why, the majority of Obama supporters who ended up voting for him could not cite a single issue he supported, not enumerate a single thing he was opposed to or had voted for as a senator. Conversely, the same goes for how the viewed his opponents. Of the ones that could quote issues, they attributed those issues to the wrong candidate. The American public wanted something different, thinking the status quo hasn't worked, and he fit the bill. I am praying for him, even though he was not my choice, he does have our beloved nation in his hands, and I am trusting in God to give him wisdom to make sound choices that are the benefit for all, but it is getting difficult to see the glass as half full. I think many times our public mindset is manipulated by the media to focus on things like race or gender so that our true focus will be distracted from the real issues that really matter. If they can get people agruing over trivial issues like this, instead of debating and brainstorming the real problems no real progress will ever be made, and the gate is left wide open for whatever they wish to accomplish.

It is unreal how someone with enough craftiness and guile about them, can mislead groups into unknowingly act or react just the way they would want. Makes me think of some politicians.
