Marilyn, how about the right to not be hanged from a fence post and tortured to death for being gay? How about the right to have a picnic in a national forest without being raped and shot? Again, this is very simple and I would encourage those making excuses to reflect a little more deeply about why.

I have done more than I care to list here... and I plan to do MUCH more. You're right cait, we weren't enslaved. Does that mean that we shouldn't have our civil rights? Women were not enslaved (technically speaking) and they got the right to vote. Maybe they should have just kept on waiting and waiting because they hadn't had it "as bad" as some other group.

This is a simple issue- equal rights for all US citizens. Period. The fact that we argue about it and pretend it's more complicated than that is a major part of the problem. We hold ourselves back by making excuses for lack of action and lack of equality.

Cait b, I have waited 35 years for my civil rights. You do not seem to be very well-informed about the hatred and prejudice facing the gay community. As Blacks were lynched, we too are (currently) shot, beat to death, dragged behind trucks, raped with bottles, and many other tortures too numerous to recount. We are spit on and told that "God hates fags". The word "gay" is used as a playground insult as if it were nothing at all.. trying replacing the word with "nigger" and see how much tolerance for it disappears.

I can see why you would believe as you do if you are ignorant of the reality of homohatred (I don't believe that it is "homophobia". It's just hatred.) According to emerging genetic research, we will soon be able to prove and explain the workings of a "gay gene", which completely erases the notion of "choice" or "preference". This is EXACTLY the same situation that faced the Black community post-slavery. They could do certain things, but not others. There is no difference here.

Obama believes that he will win favor in the gay community by "mentioning" us. But, we do not want air time. We want our CIVIL RIGHTS.

Nanina, maybe if it was your right to marry that was outlawed, you might be able to see the correlation. In all 3 states where there was an anti-gay marriage act on the ballot, they ALL passed- just as Obama was being elected president. Maybe this has something to do with the fact that HE has openly stated that he is against gay marriage? He didn't like "separate but equal" for his community, but he supports it for ours. Sorry, but that is just hypocritical.

I could have said the same things you just did about "integration" of the races... that huge numbers of supposedly powerful people wouldn't go for it, they wouldn't allow it, and that the fight is more than just political. It may be. But, civil rights are legal matters.

Yes, I voted for my civil rights in Arizona... and was denied them.

Slyphian, I agree with you- Obama cleverly used Bush maneuvers while appearing as the opposite. I do not believe he will provide what he promised and his supporters may be in for some big surprises.

For those saying that "it will happen eventually" and "he's got a lot on his plate, I'm sure he'll get around to us eventually"... can you tell me what minority group has EVER gotten their civil rights with such an approach? I believe that is precisely why we don't have them- because we allow it. Even when we become outraged about how we are treated and the inequities that exist, we search for reasons to believe that someone will EVENTUALLY get around to helping us out. Honestly, folks, we really need to do this ourselves and stop waiting for some kind of messiah to lead us there. Obama is as close to a Messiah as we've had... and he is opposed to gay marriage. Let's look that in the eye for what it is and then make our choices from that perspective. No more excuses!

Obama has NOT mentioned us more than any other political candidate. Hillary Clinton marched with us and Bill supported us when everyone believed AIDS was the "gay plague". So, that part is just not true. I agree with you- this is the first abandonment of our community by the Obama administration... and, sadly, I do not believe it will be the last. He was very clear early on that he DOES NOT support gay marriage. Instead, he VERY IRONICALLY supports the "separate but equal" policy of civil unions. It would have been an inspirational show of genuine support for the equality of ALL people if he had at least made a statement about Prop 8, but he has been silent. I expect more of the same.

It is completely a political issue and a matter of basic civil rights. Marriage is both a legal contract and a religious ceremony. As a legal contract, it should be available to all- and is throughout the world without any negative effect. The countries where it is legal have lower divorce rates than we do. (I do not attribute their low divorce rates to gay marriage, of course. But, rather in answer to the paranoid delusion that gay marriage will somehow hinder the institution of marriage itself.) As a religious ceremony, I think all religions have the ability to reject performing their marriage ceremonies for gays and lesbians, if they so choose. The church and state were intended to be separate when this country was founded and I support that completely. Gay marriage is a CIVIL right.

It is a matter of "separate but equal" and Obama supporters should be ashamed to take part in denying any other minority group their civil rights at time when they are celebrating their own. In fact, as a nation, we should be ashamed of such things... unless we place no value on what is written in the Constitution.

Yes, Obama will be the most liberal president we've ever had, which is apparent from everything he has said and written. If he has expressed more centrist views, it was in the attempt to get elected, which he has now accomplished. And, yes, like many in the community he adores, he has spoken AGAINST gay marriage... a stunning hypocrisy.

Terry, yes a white Christian pastor could say the same thing... but, it wouldn't be as stunningly hypocritical as it is coming from a Black pastor who had to fight for his own civil rights against prejudice just as the gay community is struggling to do right now.

Also, your attempt at making the point that it's impossible to know which demographic of voters voted for Prop 8 fall short in light of the fact that, if his voters had voted against it then it wouldn't have passed. It's actually a very simple matter.

Those voting for Obama because "he wasn't Bush" were hopefully not the majority and I don't think that anyone seriously believes that. It seems that people wanted "change" and "hope" and a historic statement about all the progress the US has made regarding equality. But, as these results show, it's still only equality for "some", not all.

Unfortunately, I can say that, in the women's community, it's virtually non-existent... and, as a result, herpes and HPV are being wildly circulated. The attitude is something like: **What we do doesn't spread diseases**, so **we don't need to get checked**. Another issue is that some people get offended as if wanting to be "safe" implies something about their character or poor choice in previous partners. And, it doesn't help that a "standard STD" panel doesn't check for everything, so you have to request explicitly.

The world has forgotten Tibet... and does not want to anger China. Besides that, the population seems "so small" and it's a culture the world doesn't really understand. Everybody "loves the Dalai Lama" but they do very little for the Tibetan people in general. Many "Free Tibet" organizations are ineffective and the money raised isn't used in the best way. I am doing my own small part (as a Western supporter) through my continuing Tibetan Buddhist practice and learning literary Tibetan, which I believe to be a language in danger of disappearing within two generations. I think culture preservation is a huge issue for Tibetans. So, I plan to pass whatever I learn on to my children- even just whatever level of Tibetan language I am able to achieve. I think this will make a difference in some way. I hope so!

Why does Barack continue to look flustered and indignant whenever he is questioned? My observation is that he is quite narcissistic and cannot stand being questioned... he greatly prefers the adulation he generally receives from the media, his sycophants, and his adoring fans.
