Thanks for sharing this Mike. What a great story. I visited the petroglyphs at Three Rivers in New Mexico last year. The air of mystery around them fascinates me. What a great idea for a tattoo.

For some reason they manage to always be in some position that makes them look like they have the worst conformation on earth - I think they have some sort of conspiracy going. Hard to believe though, since Suzy believes she is the Queen Mare of All, most Beautiful of mares, etc. :P LOL

Here's a wild idea. Stop letting the big oil companies run American government. Just as we chose to ostracize any politician who may have had sex outside of marriage, let's consider it just as awful if they have any connection to the oil companies. You know - like the Bush family who is deeply involved in the oil business with their Saudi friends of the family, the Osamas.

I know we would all like to be the hero and step in. BUT.

A dear friend of mine, B, became involved in an ongoing situation of domestic abuse between her best friend and her husband some years ago. The husband would beat the best friend, B would step in, stop it, give her friend shelter and encourage her to leave and so on. In the end, the husband called B to tell her he was holding her friend at gunpoint and if she didn't want to hear the shot over the phone, she better get over there. B, of course, ran to the rescue, first calling the police. By the time the police showed up the husband had shot his wife dead right in front of B (he waited until she got there - said, hah, you can't stop me and shot her), shot my friend B several times (she survived), and was threatening to shoot himself (we should be so lucky). B not only suffered the injury, she was under police protection for months until she had to testify in court to get the husband put in jail. She lives in fear of the day he is paroled, since he has promised to kill her as it is "all her fault".

On the far side of the coin - a woman of my acquaintance was beaten to death, outside of a hotel where she had fled to avoid her husband. The hotel is on a busy street, and of course, there were people in the office, too. Apparently, people drove by, the clerk turned his head, and the husband beat her to death in full public view. AFTER he left the clerk called the police and told them he "thought there MIGHT BE something wrong with the woman in room ##" Yes, she was dead in a pool of blood - big blood splashes down the outside wall of the motel that could be seen from the street days later. Now why didn't just one person driving by use their cell phone? Sure, the clerk was scared, but he couldn't have called the police BEFORE she was dead?

Law enforcement people will tell you that domestic disputes are the most dangerous calls they answer - officers are injured more frequently handling domestic disputes than when they stop a robbery in progress.

My point is DO NOT STEP IN, DO NOT INVOLVE YOURSELF. Call the police, certainly, but do not "make sure they know someone is calling" because you may well find yourself in line for violent and dangerous reprisal for your compassion and caring.

You probably don't want to hear this - but there ARE people who enjoy their domestic battles, relish them, and go back over and over to a man or woman who abuses them - and would defend their attackers if you were to try and help. The old story of the beaten wife cracking the police officer over the head with a frying pan as he arrests her abusive husband is so trite because it is true.

You can only help people who want help. If you really want to help abused spouses, volunteer at a shelter or create one if there is not one in your community. Help get the word out that shelter is available, and if the problem is that there isn't enough beds, then raise money to add them. Someone who truly wants out of that situation can run to the shelter and let people who have the resources help them.

Raise your children to know that people are not their punching bags. Teach your sons to respect their mother, sister, and all women - and same on the reverse side for your daughters. Teach your children that they don't have to be anyones punching bag, and that anyone who ever abuses them can't possibly "love" them no matter how much they apologize afterward. Maybe we can't help every victim, but we can work to stop the cycle of abuse.

Thank YOU. I am sick of parents expecting the universe to be child safe and the rest of us to behave as if their children were our own. I'm also really tired of hearing endlessly about every little foible of the famous. Granted, I was thrilled to death when Michael Vick was convicted. BUT, I am not a football fan and had to be told who he was - I heard about it through the animal rights community. See - they aren't the center of the known universe. Most of all, I agree that parents should parent - they should be role models, mentors, and examples of what they expect from their children. They chose to have children, and with that choice took on all of those responsibilities.

And look about that 12 hours a day M-F shit...My DH was working for WorldCom when all hell broke loose. He was told over and over, "hang in with us, work hard, give us your all and you will be rewarded when it is all over". He worked 12 hr days for five years, his father died alone in the hospital because James had to be at work, and his reward? When they sold what was left of the company to Verizon he was laid off with a ridiculously small settlement - because he was only a verizon employee for a few months. After six years of complete, utter devotion that nearly caused our divorce, cost him his health, and considerable grief.

No job is worth it.

I watched this at an apartment complex I used to live in. One of the neighbors drove home - was so drunk that he fell out of his car with vodka bottle in hand. It was pouring rain. I watched that man struggle and fall and stumble around the car for a good half hour trying to get to his door - he'd get up with one hand on the car and realize he'd left the vodka bottle and fall down trying to get it again. He finally crawled - vodka bottle in hand - in the driving rain - to his door. First, last and only time I saw such a drama, so I'm hoping this was just an isolated incident - not habit on his part!

I enjoyed reading this. I've just been doing some research on Christmas coloring pages search terms for my Color-Your-Own.com website and discovered that one of the most searched for terms is the 12 days of Christmas (both as Twelve and 12, and A Partridge in a Pear Tree). This led to some more research on my part on the carol. It seems that it is not quite the nonsense it appears, but like the other carols you mention it is very old and refers to the variations in the dates that Christmas and other winter holidays were celebrated. The words - a partridge, two turtledoves, three french hens, and so on seem to have been a memory aide to learning specific religious themes. For instance, the three french hens refer to the theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity. Interesting stuff.

BTW, I am Pagan and celebrate Winter Solstice - but I'm also a working artist and see no problem with creating work that appeals to people of other, any, or all religions. :D
