The soup looks so good. Other crudites can turn into cream of cauliflower or carrot soup, or cream of celery. Another thing I like to do is to chop the pepper strips and the scallions to saute and put in an omelet--with some of the leftover cheese from the cheese board.

This past summer, I had a large garden for the first time (my church ploughed up some space for community gardening), and I planted tomatillos. I learned thaat fresh from the garden, they are even better than from the market! I learned that they produce madly like indeterminate tomatoes. Put a tomato cage over each plant when it's still very small. Two plants are plenty for a small household; I planted 8 and was giving them away to everybody I know!

I am a Christian who loves the religious part of Christmas, and prefers the religious carols to the secular ones such as Frosty. I can appreciate my Jewish neighbors not wanting their children to sing religious Christmas songs; so many of them are concerned about being culturally overwhelmed and assimilating. I would completely appreciate my children singing Hanukkah songs, including the most religious of them, and would love to see winter concerts with sections for everybody's preferences. And no, the *traditional* Frosty isn't offensive to me, nor is the Dreidel Song. But are there any secular winter songs that reach the soaring beauty of _O Holy Night_? I suppose any synagogue recognition of Hanukkah would include lovely hymns about miracles and the Maccabees... (Note to self: Ask one of my Jewish friends.)

The Inappropriate Frosty may amuse some adults, but should be totally kept from children. _How I Met Your Mother_ is a thoroughy stupid and boring show. I got bored after 20 minutes of the Frosty Part 1 video, so will not watch it on TV. I saw enough to dislike the idea of children watching it.

Take care to plan *fresh* fruits and vegetables into every meal, including the all-important breakfast. Think of ways to reduce the fat in your traditional dishes. Eat enough fresh fruits and vegetables to have no appetite to tempt you into eating all the sweets.

I'm with Sonia here. Corn bread in a cast iron skillet is wonderful, but spoonbread needs to be made in a deep bpl or casserole.

The pictures are mouth-wateringly beautiful and the recipe sounds delicious. I may try this with chicken; turkey is a lot for a household of one.

The spoonbread of my childhood had no bite at all. I don't recall cheese in it.

When the budget was strained, it was dinner, with a side of cole slaw and homemade apple pie (from home picked apples) for dessert. Very cheap when your cellar has apples and cabbages from your own back yard.
